Variety reports that Sam Waterston will appear on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for the first time since the mothership series ended in 2010. Air date has not been announced yet.

I stopped watching Special Victims Unit years ago when I finally realized how utterly absurd it was (and Munch's rapidly decreasing screen time didn't help any), but I may actually tune in for this one. I probably won't even recognize the show at this point and not just the cast (only Olivia and Fin are still around from my time).

SVU is now the Olivia Benson show. Everything she does is either right or easily justified by the writing staff. I've grown to hate the character because of most of the sanctimonious bullshit that comes out of her mouth. I watch with my wife, not really by choice.

At least, you'll have something to look forward to now.

That's the boat I'm in as well. Can't stand her. I only watch for Ice-T or any other character. Looking forward to seeing Sam again as McCoy though.

I couldn't watch that show even if you paid me for exactly the reasons mentioned above. The self-righteousness is really just too much.
I can't understand how the mothership show and especially Criminal intent were cancelled while SVU trundles on and on.

CI was only made for Christopher North, once he left the show was useless. That's my least favorite L&O that lasted more than 13 episodes.

And L&O ended because of stupid LA, so so so bad. NBC is full of bad ideas. Canceling Star Trek, canceling JAG, canceling L&O. :)

Actually I would say (half of ) the series went down the drain once North was added. Was one of the lousiest Detective characters on the mothership and became even worse on Criminal Intent, and the less is said about Goldblum on CI the better.

Other than L&O vanilla, which worked with most parings (both Detectives and DA), Criminal Intent only worked with Goren and Eames IMO.

They're also bringing in the character of Peter Stone from Chicago Justice. Don't know for how long.

Which means that SVU will have Benson and also Ben's son. :D

Why?Has Chicago justice been cancelled?

And Goren & Eames were fantastic.I wish they had had some scenes between McCoy and Goren, two terrific characters(and actors).

Edit:Yeah I just googled Chicago justice and it looks like it is toast.I 'll admit to not having watched any of those Chicago shows but my missus who has tells me that the P.D. show is risible.

Yeah, as far as the Chicago shows go, Justice was cancelled. Fire and P.D. are still going. Don't know about Med.

Speaking of Chicago P.D.: Anyone who complains that SVU's Stabler gets too violent with suspects, well, he ain't got nothin' on Hank Voight.

Fun fact: Out of all the actors who are currently SVU regulars, Mariska Hargitay is the ONLY one who hasn't played at least one other L&O role. All the others are 'repeat offenders' as it were. In fact, Ice-T is the only one who's only played ONE other part in L&O (he was in the Mike Logan TV-movie, but not playing Fin). Raul Esparza, Peter Scanavino and Kelli Giddish have all played two other parts each, before assuming their current roles.

Justice lasted one season.

P.D. is easily my favourite current American cop show, mainly for Jason Beghe, Elias Koteas and Amy Morton.

,

I assume you mean Chris Noth? I never cared for him for him all that much, either. What made CI so appealing was the character of Goren and he worked best with Eames. Goldblum was cool, but for me, it was all about Goren.

I never cared for Chris North, very wooden, but I couldn't stand the blimp who just got fatter every year.

And Jeff Goldblum is awesome, but CI was / is so bad that even he sucked on the show. ;)

Word. I loved CI for them. Couldn't stand Goldblum on it though. I generally don't watch any of the episodes that he was in.

The return of Starbuck Jack McCoy is great, but when will Ben Stone return?

Michael Moriarty is, last I checked, still living out his remaining years being a libertarian lunatic in the middle of nowhere in Canada.

Looking forward to seeing Sam again as McCoy though.

There was an episode of SVU maybe, I don't know, four or five years ago, which established that McCoy is no longer the district attorney, so my guess is he winds up being a murder victim.

I can't understand how the mothership show and especially Criminal intent were cancelled while SVU trundles on and on.

Criminal Intent only lasted as long as it did because the production accepted a move to the USA Network (and, with it, a huge budget cut).

Vanilla was canceled because it had become prohibitively expensive to produce and then no one watched the 20th season (it had been hemorrhaging viewers for years), which was a disappointment because the final three seasons marked a genuine creative revival. Granted, a huge part of Season 20's dismal ratings was the move back to Friday nights. But, by 2009, procedurals were all over the place, and NBC decided it couldn't fork out the cash to pay for all the cast plus the location filming, as well as cover the ongoing costs with the significantly more popular SVU.

Nowadays, SVU is getting the viewership that got Vanilla canceled, but SVU keeps getting renewed because it's consistently delivering those numbers with almost no fluctuation: Advertisers know that it's a safe bet. Although I'm going to laugh so goddamn hard if SVU--which hasn't been about sex crimes for years--breaks the Gunsmoke record instead of Vanilla. Two more seasons and it's there.

What made CI so appealing was the character of Goren and he worked best with Eames. Goldblum was cool, but for me, it was all about Goren.

Ironic, since in CI, Eames was supposed to be the senior detective...

Given how SVU has been the Olivia Benson Show for years now, I hope Eames turns up (again) and demotes Benson to patrol duty or something. Hell, Eames is probably at least a Captain by now.
