Jack Layton, Leader of Canada's Official opposition has died

Oh no... :(

I knew he was getting treatment for cancer but this is a real shock. I was looking forward to seeing him in parliament as the opposition - such a step up for the NDP.

He'll be missed.

I wasn't optomistic about his recovery when I heard he had a second form of cancer but I have to admit that the suddenness of his death still took me by surprise.

The clear decline in his health when he made his appearance last month was shocking. He was a great, fiercely dedicated, charismatic leader who did so much to rebuild his party. I think Canadians from across all political stripes had a lot of respect for the man, regardless of whether they agreed with his politics. Very sad that he didn't get to enjoy the fruits of his success for long. Hopefully the party can stay united and continue to move forward on what he built. RIP Jack. :(

I was just outside checking on my car and was glad to see that the flag on the Peace Tower is at half mast.

Edited to add: Here's a nice article by Lisa LaFlamme on her last inveriew with Jack Layton.

I took this photo on Parliament Hill, just after noon. There was an impromptu gathering to remember Jack.

Yeah, quite a shock to me, not so much because I couldn't see it coming, but because his decline happened so quickly. I met him earlier this year at a rally and he was very gracious and treated like a rock star.

I thought about going too but I couldn't make it.

I think there's going to be another tonight, around 8 or so from what I heard.

There's been an incredible outpouring of emotion from across the country from this news, too. His last letter is just heartbreaking.

Personally, I just posted this to my Tumblr

It’s hard to put into words how I’m feeling right now. Jack Layton was more than just a politician. Sure, that’s what he was, but the word itself just seems to fall well-short of actually summing up the man.

So who was Jack, then? To me, he was an inspiration, and the kind of person that represented hope for our future. He seemed to embody all the ideals I felt were important as a Canadian, fighting passionately for social justice and equality for everyone across the country. What’s more, he tried to teach us all that if we strive hard for positive change, we can make it happen.

And beyond all that, he was the kind of man who never seemed to let anything get to his head. They say that there’s no such thing as an honest politician, but I don’t think anybody ever came as close as Jack. I had the privilege of meeting him a few times, as I used to be involved with my university’s NDP club. We would hold pub nights a couple times a year, and he would always show up if he could, to have a pint of cheap beer in a dingy student bar. And whenever I talked to him, I could sense that he truly believed in what he was saying. He was a man of conviction, charisma, and strength, and without a doubt one of the greatest Prime Ministers this country never had.

Jack will be missed, but I also believe we have to honour him by moving forwards. I don’t think he would want anyone to give up the fight because he’s gone, and I hope that his memory becomes a rallying cry for Canadians all across the country. I’m certain Jack would want that to be his legacy.

Rest in Peace.

I'm in a (very long) line at Toronto City Hall to sign a book of condolences. I didn't vote for him last time, only because I had already voted in the advance polls before the orange wave happened. He was one of the very few politicians you could count on to stand up for an issue rather than cave under the pressure of political expediency. The saddest part, for me, is wondering what could have been.

I'm not familiar with him, but he sounds like a good man. My condolences to our Canadian friends.

For those who don't know him, and even those that do, CBC News has put together a very nice video montage a few minutes long. You can see it here

For Americans unfamiliar with Layton, think of someone with the ironclad political integrity of someone like Dennis Kucinich or Ron Paul but with the charisma and personality of Barack Obama. He took a backwater, 5th place left-wing political party with less than 10% of the seats to within a hair of victory in less than a decade.

I'm not Canadian, but the NDP sounds like a party I would support if I could, and Layton sounds like he was a great guy and a great leader for his party. At least he was able to see the NDP rise in prominence enough to become the Official Opposition.

Over the last few months I've been thinking the same. I'm not sure who I'll vote for next time. The thing about the NDP is that they've always been the party that you'd want to vote for except they've never had a chance at winning. Except last time they very nearly did.
