I had the same thought..I guess those were just her excuses or she never felt the timing was right or it would always be one thing after another plus her knowing that Picard didn't want family and fear of losing Jack like she lost Wesley, her husband, and her parents. That's why Picard was angry that she didn't give him a choice to live a different life if he knew. Picard wasn't really buying her reasons in that scene. I think Beverly as a character was completely in the wrong but those were the reasons she gave and I do see how they can make sense from her point of view.
No ones age in this show makes any sense. It's like somebody wrote out the story about Picard finding his 18 year old son and it got all the way to the final draft before somebody said, "Eh, isn't Picard like 90 at this point?" Ed Speleers is a 34 year old actor reciting dialog meant for a teen. Meanwhile, I'm supposed to buy old man Patrick Stewart fathering a kid when he barely has enough voice left to get his lines out. The whole thing is ridiculous. And how old was Beverly when they hooked up? Like 60? And she just got naturally pregnant? Without any help? This is dumb.
James Doohan fathered a child when he was about 80 so picard doing so post nemesis is believable to me.

Gates was early 50's after nemesis. Patrick Stewart 60's but Picard was in his early 70's after nemesis. People live longer. McCoy was 137. Picard age was never mentioned during TNG but I think adding 14 years onto his real age is due to an error on TNG that established his age 14 years older than he really was during the show. I forget the error but Trek fans talked about it for years. Picard Season one made that age official Canon. People simply live healthier longer lives in Star Treks future.
As for a early 50 something year old woman getting pregnant. It's not out of the realm of possibility in real life. It's even happened to woman in their early 60's with some help...lol. I would assume since people live longer in Star Trek. Woman also can get pregnant at an older age. Not a big deal.

I draw the line at an actor looking slightly older than his character and "F" bombs! F bombs can't exist in the future!! <sarcasm>
First Contact movie should be removed from canon because there's no way that guy calling himself Zefram Cochrane is the 31 years old that Cochrane's canonically supposd to be in that movie.
I've seen people in their 40's who look like they're in their 20's and vice-versa.
What I don't get about Jack? How is he so functional and well adjusted when he was raised by Beverly, who also raised Wesley.

No offense but it says a LOT about the current values and state of our society if someone with a criminal record and multiple fake identities is considered functional and well adjusted by the norms of viewers in our society. Jack exhibits a masculinity that channels how they want to portray this character, and that's why they cast an actor 13 years older. For what it's worth, it's ironic because 20+ something Ed Speleers was told by pretty much everyone (in-universe) in Eragon that he looked too young and wimpy to be their hero.
It's why despite my clean record, professional license, and advanced degrees I couldn't get a date into my thirties as a young looking Asian man suffering from all the unmasculine stereotypes about Asian men, and that's not even getting into my mild genetic hearing loss disability. I do feel that rather than that creepy Leah Brahms' stuff TNG should've tackled Geordi's dating struggles as a disabled man of color head on, but that's another story.
As for Jack's differences to Wesley, Beverly raised him completely differently in the most dangerous areas of space (thus showing the falsehoods in her claims that hiding Jack from Picard was out of concern to his safety). Jack had to develop "street smarts" that Wesley didn't really have because he was in a sheltered environment, even if that sheltered environment was the military.
Yeah, Jack does not strike me as well adjusted. Functional enough to survive, but not well adjusted, nor someone to admire or aspire to be like. The actor is trying but the character is terrible.

Well he seems to be doing this to help people. Yes doing a wrong doesn't make a right, but it's not for personal gain.
