News J Michael Straczynski is interested in Doctor Who showrunner

I looked at his Twitter feed.

Who is this dumbfuck?
Saved The Daleks and the other stories found at Enterprises in 78. Maybe. But was able to do so because his success as a DJ meant he had a lot of money, and could spend it on getting copies of his favourite series, not because he had a genius for finding lost episodes.
But he did have money and determination, and without that combination...

I want to like him, especially because of his encyclopedic knowledge of Who and he has had enormous access to all things, but more often than not he's acting like an entitled prick. Sure, maybe JNT didn't do a lot of good on the show, but dude, you left after Bonnie Langford was only cast. Like, nuts.

Won't he need a work visa?

My wife had to stand down for 6 months before her tourist visa morphed into a work visa.

Can you imagine him at the immigration office?

"Reason for entering the country?"

"I'm going to save Doctor Who."

"Not on my watch."

So still time for JMS and Whoopi to take over then...

I really would like to see another successful genre show from him seeing as Sense8 bombed...

Take your pick.

Most of those don't feature the full quote which was reported by someone who was there, but that's journalism for you.
Lead with that next time. ;)

Preferably one instead of a Google link which changes its results.

Sense8 didn't bomb. It was very well received by fans and critics alike. The only reason it was canceled was because it was extremely costly considering the filming locations around the world on nearly every continent. And even then, it briefly came back to close things off because fandom was so vocal for such a film.

It would be nice to have a competent showrunner who actually wants the job to run Doctor Who, and almost anybody would be better then Chibnall was. JMS has had a mixed career post B5, but I'd be up to see his take on the show.

OK, I actually educated myself about it that very evening, I remembered only mixed reception in the time of the first episode. I might watch the series as a whole sometimes.

There's a truth to that. Wanting the job and having a good pedigree is nice. He's had critical success with B5 and Sene8 (which I loved), so I would be interested. But as mentioned by the rest, it's doubtful the BBC would consider him.

Oh yeah, I know he basically has no chance. The BBC will probably hire the cheapest person who already works/has worked for the BBC who is willing to do it, regardless of whether they'd be any good for the job or even care about the franchise. As long as they can produce 1-10 episodes every 3-4 years, they'll probably be considered good enough for Doctor Who showrunner at this point, unfortunately.

I mean, they'll still probably hire someone better at the job then Chibnall, but I'm sure there are dozens (at minimum) of people in the industry who would be great for the job would will never be seriously considered when there are probably a bunch of mediocre people the BBC know and can get easier/for cheaper.

Well, it'd be nice to count on your vote against the Tories next time they rag on about overspending at the BBC.

Oh wait, you can't vote here.

What the hell does that matter? You don't have to be English to have an opinion about Doctor Who and how it gets treated by the BBC. Also, Doctor Who has had trouble with the BBC before, it was pretty much sabotaged and cancelled in the classic era because an asshole who legitimately hated the show was in charge of the BBC. Obviously things aren't that dire for the show nowadays, but budget issues and having trouble finding new showrunners have been problems since the classic era, its not just something connected to modern British politics.

Hiring Chibnall was also a huge mistake unrelated to who was running the UK, but that bad decision making plus the BBC having less of a budget (that, this time around, is presumably a government caused problem) is definitely going to effect who becomes the new showrunner, so its worth discussing if you're a Doctor Who fan, regardless of what country you live in.

I say this as a huge fan of B5: I'm glad they told him to bugger off.

Thing is, as much as I like B5, I've never really been able to get along very well with pretty much anything else he's done since (that wasn't a close collaboration.) Part of that is on me since I find his authorial voice so recognisable, it often takes me right out of the story. It's weirdly off-putting for example to be reading a Superman comic, and suddenly (figuratively) hear Clark speaking in G'Kar's voice. Hell, a few weeks back I was watching some old RGB episodes on youtube for the nostalgias and it just so happened to be one of his, and sure enough, about 5 mins in, Egon starts cracking wise like Garibaldi. I mean that's some serious character cognitive dissonance! At least Superman and G'Kar are in the same philosophical ballpark...

So yeah, as much as I think DW needs a fresh creative in charge, I don't think this would be a good fit. they might invite him to write an episode, but for various reasons I doubt anything will come of it.

Well, the background Jack gives regarding the other Torchwood outposts is kind of similar to the fates of the other Babylon stations. Particularly the fourth one disappearing and expected to someday return.

I haven't noticed much discussion of this part of Chibnall's DWM article, as quoted in Radio Times:

Writing in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Chibnall said: “The big change that happened during our tenure has been Doctor Who being produced through BBC Studios, rather than the BBC’s in-house Drama Department.

“It’s a difference which won’t really have affected how you view the show, but it affects the process by which the programme is made, managed and planned strategically.

“The appointment of a new showrunner is a commercially sensitive decision (way above the pay grade of an incumbent showrunner) so it’ll be a joint decision between BBC Studios and the top decision-makers at the BBC.”

I don't know anything about the BBC, so I have no idea how moving from BBC in-house to BBC Studios affects things like the show's budget, how the show is produced and scheduled, etc, but generally you make a change when you want to do things differently. It's entirely possible that some of the decisions made during the last few years are related to this, as well as the pandemic massively disrupting TV production, and are not all the work of Chris Chibnall. Although I don't doubt some people hate him enough to blame him for COVID-19, too.
