J. J. Abrams' Star Trek on track to set records

It's not significant - what matters is that on Monday the press covers the "four day total/five day total/opening total" or whatever as some big-ass number which is inflated by the early opening. And when the next big movie opens a week later everyone talks about the "XXX dollar opening of last week's blockbuster" as the point of comparison.

There is also a bit of a lemming aspect too, that when people hear about how huge of an opening the film had they think "shit, if it did that well I should go see it myself."

Right, I was just wondering about the specific claim made in this article...about the prospect of the movie making $80-100 million in its "opening weekend". If they're counting Thursday night, then $80 million sounds more plausible.

The Thursday night boxoffice counts toward the 3 day weekend boxoffice. When this practice started they would start Thursday at midnight, which is technically on Friday, but now studios are cheating and having earlier Thursday showings as well.

How are we defining "opening weekend"? Because the movie is now set to open on Thursday night at 7pm, right? So is Thursday night part of "opening weekend"? Because I imagine it's going to do a lot of business in those first few hours.

ST opens in Australia on the traditional Thursday morning at 9am.

That makes it 6pm WEDNESDAY in the US.

Loving that.

Thanks for the math :P

Will Australia's Thursday be counted in the opening weekend (cause unlike in America its not a sneak peek).

Well tracking has appeared and says:

WOLVIE: Mid 90's
Ghosts: Mid 20's
Terra: Sub 5..

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: Mid 80's (4 day)
TERM: Mid 120's 5 Day (High 80's 3 day)
STAR TREK: High 50's
ANGELS & DEMONS: Low 60's
NEXT DAY AIR: Low Teens

So I don't have a clue where this article is getting its info...

That tracking info came out a couple of weeks ago if I recall correctly. Looks like things have changed..!

Trek will open bigger than 50's and T-4 will not open that big and will have soft legs.

Yeah I am very curious. Now the Canadian one could be in refrence to internal tracking, but the public tracking sites aren't anywhere near that high.

If I'm interpreting HollywoodStockExchange right - and I may well have it all wrong - their current price for Trek would place its expected opening in the low 60s.

I'm really surprised to see Star Trek predicted at 50 or 60 Mil for it's opening week. I still say, 120 Million.

And, I really don't think Wolverine or T-4 will do so well. Those franchises are old and busted. Star Trek, fresh and new!

Of course, this is just my speculation... fueled with beer.

I prey for $60+ Million on opening weekend, you guys over $80 are getting your hopes up WAY too much, I did that for Nemesis and... er.. well............

Don't set yourselves up for a disappointment.
