iZombie Season 1 Discussion and Spoilers

Sure I might have less chance of getting HIV, but that's probably because I don't take a tablespoon of blood from everyone I meet and erotically slurp it down and gargle like it's mouthwash.

Blaine got some one with a finger nail, but Major kissed Liv and he's fine.

Meanwhile, Ravi got bitten by the rat and didn't get infected. In most zombie/outbreak fiction, that's pretty much a sure bet for getting sick.

Tonight's episode was probably my favorite of the series so far!

(more comments later after other folks have had a chance to watch it)

I feel like a fool. I suspected as soon as Major came back just after leaving, and as soon as Daran Norris/Johnny Frost showed up, that they were Liv's delusions, but I didn't hold onto the suspicion and just let myself buy into what was happening. I didn't realize how passive "Johnny Frost" was being. I did wonder why "Major" accepted the truth about Liv's zombie-ism so easily, but I didn't think it through.

I guess I was too annoyed by Liv calling 911 to complain about a loud party. That's an abuse of an emergency number! As a member of the law enforcement community, she should know what a jerk move that is, wasting a 911 operator's time when there might be a real emergency they're needed for. And surely she knows the regular police number. Quite a stumble on the writers' part to throw that in.

But she wasn't really calling about a real party, which would indeed be frivolous. She was calling so that the police could apprehend a murder suspect . .. ..

Yes, of course, but it still sets a bad example for viewers to suggest that it is ever okay to abuse 911 for something so frivolous as a noise complaint. It's an emergency line, not a routine contact number. And I'm not sure what the rules are for 911 operators in a case like that, but it seemed the operator should've said something about how inappropriate it was, rather than just going along with the whole thing.

The bait-and-switch of most of Liv and Major's interactions in this episode being imaginary really annoyed me and brought down my overall enjoyment of the episode considerably, which is a shame because, up until the 'reveal', I was prepared to rank the episode as the best of the season.

^I dunno -- even though I forgot about my initial suspicion that it was a delusion, I did find it all too good to be true.

It bothered me because it felt like a cheap stunt that served no narrative purpose.

Except to (hopefully) surprise the viewer and break our hearts?

Not every scene needs to move the plot forward from Point A to Point B. The real goal is to provoke a response from the viewer.

"Whoa! Didn't see that coming. Poor Liv!" is the purpose there.

Twists for the sake of twists rarely work; most of the time they come across as stupid and cheap, and that's exactly what happened last night, especially since this particular 'twist' basically rendered 1/3 or so of the episode pointless.

Gotta disagree here. Twists that entertain and provoke a pleasant sense of surprise are hardly "cheap" or "stupid" and can be justified on those grounds alone. Doesn't matter if they advance the plot or not.

If the episode is fun and engaging and provokes an emotional response, it's not pointless. Surprising the audience is the point.

Xander being blinded in one eye was done purely to 'surprise' the audience, and is the worst creative decision Joss Whedon ever made, so I stand by my opinion.

The iZombie writers were on a roll last night, only to go and shoot themselves in the foot with a completely unnecessary 'twist' that did way more harm than good.

I'm so dissatisfied with what went down that I may never watch this episode again.

I think the purpose was emotional -- to remind us of Liv's deepest hopes and wishes about reconciling with Major and winning his acceptance for what she is, in order to reinforce how devastating it is for her to learn that Major has developed such a murderous hatred for zombies. Sure, technically we already knew this was what she wanted, but it's kind of subsided into the background while Liv has focused on fighting Blaine. So it was emotionally and, yes, narratively useful to reassert what's going on in her head and her heart just before the big reveal about Major.

On the other hand, I assume the weatherman thing was just Rob Thomas's excuse to bring back Daran Norris, who was part of the recurring ensemble on Veronica Mars. And, of course, a plot device to give her someone to talk to while she went after the video.

The weatherman thing was nicely handled. The whole time I thought he was a little "off," but, hey, it's a whimsical show so I could buy it giving us a character that was more than a little eccentric. It was a broad performance, but not completely at odds with the heightened reality of the show.

And then it all made sense . . . like the best twists do.

Ever since Fight club, no one is real unless they pick some shit up, and interact with the tactile universe around them.
