I've just been accepted into College. Life is good.

Well done.

Excuse me? I went to College and then went onto University thank you very much.

Me too. Because I couldn't get into University without going to college first.

So you did College instead of Sixth Form then because you could have got in via that route. That's normally the way things are done in the UK.

I personally did my GCSE's at 16, did lower Sixth Form or AS level as they were introduced as that year and then did transferred to College after and then University after that.

The way you phrased it earlier, it's either/or College/University here which to be honest, isn't the case at all.

On this side of the pond, colleges and universities are all the same thing.

What you're describing would be either Community College or a Junior College (2 years) here. For some, that's the end of the line, and you come out with an Associate's degree or a certificate to the specific field you were studying (usually technical, I think). For others, it's either a way to bring grades up to get into (or a better) college, or to save some money by earning a few credits at a cheaper rate, or while living at home, working a full-time job, raising a child, etc.

Congrats, Aldo! Great news!! Be sure to keep your level of dedication up!

Mr Awe

I'm gonna do my damnedest come this fall. When I was in Community College I fucked off a lot, and eked by with a 2.0. But this time I know I have to try hard, this is my future.

^ I think you'll find that with the additional life experience that you've had since then, it'll probably be easier to apply yourself this time around! I'm sure you're more mature and you know what's on the line this time! You'll do great!

Mr Awe

Thank you for the confidence :)

I'm listening to this song, so I thought I'd mention it:

The song Closing Time was a big part of my life when I was in the process of making the transition from living on my own to moving back in with my folks. Now while it wasn't the song itself that caused the change (that would be silly), but the song did lift my spirits when I was questioning my motives, namely "Every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end."

Congratulations sir. I'm readying things for a similar transition myself after nearly a decade fooling around with occasional stints at community colleges and hourly jobs. I honestly think a lot of high-school grads would be better served by taking a few years to take stock of their life rather than going straight to college just because it is expected of them. I never took it seriously and it showed. Going back because it is something I want, with an actual goal in mind, gives me far more drive and enthusiasm than I ever had my first time around.

Good luck to you.

Congratulations, Aldo. I hope the experience is everything you want it to be. :techman:

I too have recently made the decision to return to school, in an effort to get my life on some sort of track. I already have a B.A. from my time at university, but I've never had any idea what to do with it. To echo some of the other comments here, I probably didn't take my studies as seriously as I should have; I never had any plans beyond graduation, and by the end, I had lost most of my interest.

I was feeling burnt out after graduation, and more schooling was the last thing on my mind, but now, a return to an academic setting feels right. Like Aldo, I'm more motivated and determined than I was the first time around. Perhaps age and maturity aren't so bad after all. ;)

I think it's very likely that in five years time this could be coming from my mouth. :)

I'm undecided whether university was a mistake or if the mistake was choosing not to stay on for a masters, though I was truly tired of education when I left. Or perhaps there's been no mistake at all and I'm just a bit uncertain about my path in life right now.

I can easily see myself going back to university...once I have some money in the bank.

I hope this is really something you want to do. I don't know where you are in the U.S., but teaching isn't what it used to be. They've really made it suck lately.

But congrats, I guess.

Yes. Don't expect to have the same experience your teachers had when you were in that age group. I just had my first real teaching job... and there was no way to be prepared. Stay on your toes and don't let your university department have too much control over your path to teaching. And be careful when you get your first teaching job. I've been told to be mean, because I'm new.

Good luck

It really is something I want to do, actually. I realize it's not what it used to be, but I'm determined to get there.

Congratulations Aldo. I'm sure this will lead you to many good things. You've got the right attitude, the motivation and drive. You're gonna be great!

Good on you Aldo and congrats for having the guts to make a change.

Nick would love nothing more than to go back to uni again
