I've been doing some "digesting"

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Saw it over the weekend, finally.

I'm not offended, I'm not disliking this.

I mourn the things we've lost.

I'm not entirely sure the differences we've seen can be totally blamed on Nero's changing the past. This may be a reality that was always different from "our" Trek to begin with. Nero may have just made it even more different.

This movie also has a very different "feel" to it than anything we're used to under the banner "Star Trek". It moves almost TOO fast, maybe in more than one way, but that's the way it is.

This may be the only way ANY new Trek will have to be from now on to survive and be enough of a money-maker for them to do more onscreen stories. (The books may NEVER die, but would we want the only new Trek to be in printed form from now on?)

I'm just about ready to say that this is NOT our universe. In a way that's good, since maybe it never got changed at all, and even its older Spock is still alive in the 24th century. Maybe there never was a Nero, a supernova, the destruction of Romulus... We may never see it again, but at least it's still there.

This, however, is the only onscreen Star Trek there is now. Can't see they'll ever go back to how it was. I know people. This fed the masses. Not in an entirely bad way, certainly in a different way, but that's what it's aiming to do because it wants to live. It's buttering up to people.

That may mean it's going to make it.

I mourn what we've lost, but I'm not opposed to seeing this new universe unfold. Star Trek lives. Kirk and Spock (YES! KIRK AND SPOCK!!!) are out there doing what they've always done, and they're in their prime!

...And we get to see more of that!

Star Trek lives. It's not the Trek we knew, but Star Trek lives.

Certainly not, as those differences existed before Nero arrived. The Kelvin and its crew really don't have a pre-TOS feel to them.

The movie is a plain and simple reboot/reimagining, regardless of the presence of a future Spock.

Exactly. And i would have more respect for Abrams and co if they had the guts to just come out and say it. Instead they will spout "Alternate Timeline" just to try to appease fans who didnt see the need for a reboot.
About the only way "Alternate Timeline" works is if George Kirk was somehow responsible for Starfleet completely changing its asthetic when it comes to ship and uniform design. Perhaps he was the one who pointed out it just looked tacky.

I was someone who thought a reboot was unnecessary and after seeing the film, i stand by that. The film was average, which is what ive come to expect from an Abrams film. Do i hate it? No, there were some good aspects to the film, but its story was hindered by gaping plotholes, again something i have come to expect from anything produced by Abrams.

I can accept that this may be the future of filmed Star Trek, and i can live with it. I just hope the sequel is better.

But for the love of god get rid of Simon Pegg as Scotty. He was just awful.

^^^^Agreed. Though I think they could have done a proper Prequel even witht the look of things different. The Asthetics didnt bother me in the least. They could have done a good Prequel within the confines of Canon. They chose not to. And yes Scotty, and Chekov were badly done. Way to much comic relief.

Glad you saw it Gastrof and are not totally gushing over it or totally hating it for that matter. You are correct that it doesnt exactly feel like the Trek we knew. Which is the way it is and I probably wont invest any money in any further releases. The film jut didnt do anything for me. Its great though that many fans are happy with it. I hope they enjoy every minute of it because it really wont last beyond 3 or 4 movies.

For now though Star Trek is over for me. I enjoyed all the series, even Voyager and Enterprise(which now seems more in line with TOS than this new film) and I enjoyed most of the films. The old Trek had a good run.

By "pre-TOS feel," do you mean they should have made it look like a cheap TV show of how people in the 1950s imagined the 23rd century?

It certainly seemed 100 years more advanced than what was seen in "Star Trek: Enterprise."

The movie is a plain and simple reboot/reimagining, regardless of the presence of a future Spock.
Well, by those criteria, all 10 previous movies were reboots. EVERY ONE of the 11 "Star Trek" films has completely redesigned the ships, the sets, the costumes, the props, and the actors' hair and make-up. This one is no different.
