It's time for an American Doctor

Use a false accent.

Of course there are plenty of British actors who are still available, so that is hardly necessary.
So Brits should be banned from all American productions, too?

Not necessarily - as most fans of Law & Order (seriously, Linus Roache's New York accent was absolutely flawless on that show), Homeland or The Walking Dead would attest, it would seem that British actors are better at doing American accents, than the reverse. ;)

Meh, on The Walking Dead it took Andrew Lincoln over a year to perfect his American accent, and David Morrisey never really pulled it off convincingly, IMO.

That's not the point.

Ríu ríu, chíu claims that an American actor shouldn't get British parts because there's plenty of British actors around. Ergo, considering how many American actors there are, British actors should be completely shut out of the industry over there.

You can't have it one way but not the other. That's the definition of being a hypocrite.

^ I should have been more specific: The Doctor is a special case. His Britishness is absolutely essential to the character.

If an American actor can portray him, but still speak and act British while doing so, I guess it would be okay, but I don't know how many American actors could convincingly pull that off.

And, I thought David Tennant's 'American accent' was pretty bad in that 'American-show-he-did-that-obviously-didn't-last-long-partly-due-to-the-horrid-accent.'

Question how often has a Brit replaced an American in the same role in a TV series?

In the same role? Probably never. But we don't have many roles that require that kind of thing...

Does it have to be TV? In a film franchise that had its origins in TV, American Bibi Besch replaced by Brit Alice Eve in STID comes to mind. The same film also replaced Mexican Ricardo Montalban with Brit Benedict Cumberbach, and Canadian James Doohan with Brit Simon Pegg.

^ Mind you, seeing as Mexican Montalban was playing an Indian and Canadian Doohan a Scotsman, it's not the most straightforward of situations to begin with!

Sure you can, if you acknowledge that the American entertainment industry has a huge advantage in money and international cultural influence over the British entertainment industry, and therefore want to preserve the British entertainment industry's distinctive Britishness so that it can preserve its cultural identity in the face of American influence.

You are presuming an equality that doesn't exist.

....this would be like having a British guy play a French Star Trek captain. Who'd want to see that?!?!?
When Picard was on the holodeck living out Dixon Hill fantasies, Patrick Stewart was a Brit portraying a Frenchman portraying an American.

I feel this is the time to whip out the Highlander card. A Scot playing an ancient Egyptian living as a Spaniard, asking a Frenchman playing a Scot, what haggis is...

It's just a shame they didn't take their own advice "There can be only one" and we had to suffer through several sequels which were never as good as the original.

I enjoyed the "Highlander" series as well for the most part it's just a shame the films aside from the first one were rather lacklustre.
