I'm looking forward to Trek XI, but it occurs to me that the Trek I grew up with, and that many of us take great pleasure in picking over the minutae of, will be well and truly laid to rest on 25/12/08. The fact that "dozens" of takes were required to get the Nimoy-Quinto vulcan salute "hand-off" just right, indicates JJ and co. are probably aware of this.
I suppose it's time. May Gene, DeForest, Jimmy D. and Matt J. rest in peace...this too shall pass...
You know, this is the sort of ASSUMPTIONS that are really starting to get to annoy me. Nothing personal... but c'mon...
You know, if you have these two guys standing across from each other giving each other the "Vulcan High-Five," sure, it's just senseless to assume that it takes 20 takes.
Then again, if it's NOT A FRIGGIN' TIME TRAVEL STORY AT ALL... the "dozens of takes" bit makes perfect sense.
They need to get Nimoy in a particular stance... then they need to get Quinto in the exact same stance... so that Nimoy's Spock (in the late 24th or early 25th century) suddenly MORPHS, on-screen, into Quinto's Spock... and we're into the story that Nimoy's Spock is relating to us.
This sort of handoff "morph/dissolve" only works if the lighting, stance, hand-position, facial expression, etc, etc, all match up.
So, ya know, this is yet another indication that the whole "time travel" bit is bullshit, and we're getting what I originally understood the story to be... Elder Spock relating a "how it all came to be" story to his protege.
When I'd been led to believe that there'd been some sort of official statement to the contrary, I was a bit annoyed, since this sort of dramatic change to a script isn't unheard of but really would've ruined the story I expected to see. But now that I know that the source of the "time travel" bit was some guy's IMAGINATION... and nobody on the production team has ever so much as MENTIONED "time travel," well...
