It's Election Time...

In 2372 the President of the Federation is Inyo-Jaresh, how does one get elected President of the Federation, are votes taken on a planet by planet basis. Does each Planet in the Federation get one vote, with a winner take all. Are there primaries and different political parties on each world. And for how long does the President get to to serve and, What are the qualifications needed to become President of UFP. Has this topic ever been discussed either in the Series, Films or Books???

I would imagine that the Federation Council would vote for the president. It seems like a major pain in the ass to hold elections across an entire planet let alone the entire federation.

Agreed, it would be a VERY MAJOR pain to try to hold an election across as many planets as are in the UFP, It does bring up another question though, how does one get a seat on the Federation Council, It's probably not a cut-throte as getting a seat on the Klingon high Council, still it would be interesting to find out

I imagine its probably a multi-tiered federal system. Each planet has local governments and the leaders of those local governments appoint or elect someone to the higher level of government. Sort of like how Governors used to appoint the members of the US Senate. Those representatives then elect their leader like in a parliamentary system. That leader then appoints members to the Federation Council in much the same way a President or Prime minister appoints members to the United Nations

read the novel "A Time for War, A Time for Peace" it heavily features a UFP special election.

short version, popular vote on all member planets, moons, stations and starships.

We talked about this only two weeks ago and there is no consensus. However, the President that appeared in TVH was credited as "President of the Council" so in the 23rd century it does seem that he is selected by the council and not by majority vote.

Chosen from the Federation Council.

Though it still doesn't excuse the fact they elected the weak-willed Inyo as President.

Palpatine should have been elected Federation President.

Dave Palpatine.....brother of Emperor Palpatine.

While it's non-canon, Jaresh-Inyo was apparently a very respectable president, just not suited to running the Federation in a time of war.

OTOH, his successor was apparently a damn good war-time president who proceeded to make some major mistakes of his own.
