It's at least three continuities...

there is no discrepancy that can't be rationalized with minimum effort.

Why bother?

Rationalizing a thing rarely makes it plausible - if something isn't at least intuitively wrong there's no real urge to rationalize it at all.

The pre-1979 version of Trek fits okay with the first six movies - everything was looser and more improvised - but doesn't belong in the Roddenberry Revised Universe.

Which rather makes sense, as the intent with TNG was so clearly to recreate Star Trek as a thing more satisfying to the 1987 version of Gene Roddenberry while deprecating the movies that had followed TMP.

1987 and later is a different animal.

That's not what's being proposed here, so....

No, of course it isn't.

This is more of a stated formulation of the obvious truth than it is a proposal, anyway: this is how the history of Star Trek really worked.

There was a TV show that spun off, after a decade, into a group of movies that capitalized on whatever the attraction and affection for the series and the actors who appeared it was. Every movie was a one-off based on the reception of the previous movies, mining the original series for characters and settings.

That was the TOS-based version of Star Trek.

And then, in 1987 the studio that owned it decided to start developing syndicated TV shows from some of its IP - War of The Worlds, Friday The 13th, and Star Trek. And the entire Franchise is based on how unexpectedly successful that first syndicated TV show was. Until recently, there was an unbroken chain of talent and producers responsible for the entire thing from 1987 onward.

I actually agree with you. In general I think consistency in long term franchises can be broken down into the different production teams who worked on each project. They are more likely to be knowledgeable of their own work.

BUT I think there is no harm in overlooking discrepancies either. This is fiction not real archeology! Even those individual productions and even specific individuals were inconsistent to their own work.

Well, it's three universes.

Obviously, as STD builds the TNGVerse version of the 23rd century it will be different from the TOSVerse just as the JJVerse 23rd century is.

Can't be. Remember, CBS has passed biblical law down from the mountain that this is all one continuity. :guffaw:
