It's a.... Stargate!

I don't know much about the Stargate series, except the initial movie. Are there different sizes of the stargates? Which one are you doing? Are the Chevrons the same for all the stargates? Is the bottom part supposed to be burrowed into the ground?

As I recall, we've seen six different "classes" of stargate so far:

The Milky Way, Pegasus, and Destiny gates are all approximately the same size, two stories tall or so.

The Tollan built their own gate and interfaced it with the Milky Way network. It was a bit smaller.

Orlin, one of the race who built the gates, managed to construct a single-use version maybe 4 feet across using parts from Carter's microwave and toaster. And some hefty credit card bills from online shopping, too.

The Orii, an offshoot of the race who built the gates, arranged for the construction of a massive Supergate large enough for starships.

I have thought for a while about dressing one of the bathrooms in my house up in the colors of the SGC, hanging a mirror that looks like the one that allowed transit between parallel Earths over the sink, a toilet seat that looks like the stargate, and putting a "DHD" that flushes the toilet on a little table beside the toilet. If anyone (like, say, an unsuspecting guest) flushes the toilet with the regular handle rather than the DHD, speakers hidden all over the bathroom will begin loudly blaring alarms and the sound of Walter announcing an "Unscheduled offworld activation", the symbols on the seat would start glowing, a blue light will suffuse the bowl, and small jets will spray clean water up above the level of the bowl briefly. (Or maybe aimed at where the flusher would be standing.)

My wife thinks this is funny, but will not allow that it is a "good idea".

That last part is easy - just give a bidet to the Mythbusters and see what it comes back as.

Wow. That would be interesting, at least. :)

No more progress yet... it was raining this afternoon. Maybe tomorrow...

Way back when I did my stargate model, I found a lot of people had started using it as reference for their own, and some people were even asking me questions directly. I collated all my research and put up a guide page for people making stargates. The gylph listing is, I believe, still the most accurate one on-line.
David,
You have some nice work on your website. Not just Stargate, but BG and Trek as well.

Thanks. I've been slacking a bit in the last year with school and such, but I hope to get back on the wagon and update that site fairly soon. Maybe over the winter holidays.

:guffaw: DO IT!

OK, not much progress to show. I did get the final textured coat on here.

I finished my costume, too. It's not even close to accurate, but I think it will pass... especially when I am standing next to the Stargate. :) Total, for all this stuff, Including the gate, my costume, and my wife's costume, I've got about $175 into all of this. Not too bad. :)

More costume pics...

I'll have the gate done, tomorrow.

OK, it finally done!

Here's the back of it, in case anyone is interested. It's a mess, but it keeps it standing up. :)

And.... Unscheduled Offworld Activation!

This thing stands up with just a few concrete blocks propping it up. The plan is to drive some 2x2 poles into the ground, and hook it to those for our party. I have a bunch of broken concrete and brick that I'm going to put around the base, to make it look like ruins.

I've also been able to borrow an LCD projector, so we are building a "drive in" to watch old black and white horror movies on. I hope it turns out like I think.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: Forgot to say, I didn't tweak those orange "Chevrons" with anything... that's what they look like, since I sprayed them with Fluorescent orange road marking paint. :)

It's engineered enough for Halloween.

Now, going forward, you need to build a functioning iris. That way, when someone sticks their head through at the wrong moment...

Good idea. :)

I thought I would go ahead and post up what it looked like all set up, for the party...

A couple of nerds...

In that last image, you can see our "Ancient power conduit" (a piece of fence wire, a metal pipe, and christmas lights. :) ) and my dialing computer. It had SGCSIM 5.1 running on it. When it got dark, we had a strobe light pointed at the tree behind the gate, and the sounds turned up like that. It was neat to hear "Offworld Activation!" every 5 minutes. Next year, I think we might use a fog machine behind it, with the strobe pointed outward. That might work in person, but I'm not sure how it would translate into a picture...

Actually the Tollan gate was the same internal diameter as all the other gates, just much thinner as it had no ring or chevrons.

As to the OP, That is really cool, ive always wanted my own 'Gate.

Thanks. :)

I actually thought about building the Tollan version, since it is simpler, but I thought it might not be recognizable of what it was. You have to include the symbols. :)

This makes me inordinately happy.

Nice work.

If I had a back yard, you can bet your bippy that the entrance to the garden would be a Chappa'ai. :)

Indeed, eventually i plan to build up a (if not full sized) nice sized Pegasus style gate, because it will be infinitely easier to plug-n-go some LEDs than get the ring to spin.

Not that i can make the symbols spin around it either, but the lit up chevrons and symbols would be enough.

I had the same idea, except I was going to have it be the entrance to a standalone deck. My wife said no. :)
