It's a.... Stargate!

Hey, everbody. I mentioned over in the Life-Sized shuttle thread that Bradester had given me the idea to build a Stargate, for my own Halloween party. I built it in Blender a few weeks ago, and worked out the construction...

It's made out of that Blue Insulation foam that you can get at Lowe's, with a framework of 1x2's in the back, to make it kind of "rigid".

Well, here we go...

Packed away, for long term storage...

The guy in the picture is my little brother... It was very windy, and I had to have someone hold it.

It's about halfway done... I'm going to put lights in the Chevrons, put on the symbols, and then lightly spray it with a coat of that Spray Paint that's textured like rock.

It has it's problems, but what do you guys think?

I don't know much about the Stargate series, except the initial movie. Are there different sizes of the stargates? Which one are you doing? Are the Chevrons the same for all the stargates? Is the bottom part supposed to be burrowed into the ground?

No, they are all normally the big, 24' in diameter ones. Mines about 8'... maybe it's a small personal one? The Chevrons are similiar on the ones from SG1, and Atlantis... but the new show is different.

Normally the thing is part of a raised platform... and some are kind of half buried.

It's still a WIP, of course.

Wow, you did build it!!! Is it double-sided? Have you figured a way for a special effect in the middle? You could even just have slats of clear plastic hanging that people walk thru (similar to the entrance of a freezer) and have a blue light shining on it.

No, it's only single sided. I'd going to have it near some bushes, so that people won't go around the back of it. I'm going to have the chevrons lighting up, but I haven't decided about the middle. I thought about using a blue tarp, with a spotlight behind it...

Another idea is to reflect the light off a glass pan or plate with some water in it onto a silver cloth or paper.

I collated all my research and put up a guide page for people making stargates. The gylph listing is, I believe, still the most accurate one on-line.

Awesome glyphs. I don't have the room on this small gate for them all... but these are better than anything I have been able to find, so far.

Alright, I made some minor progress.

I got the symbols cut out... and it's now ready for it's coat of textured paint. I think I am going to use florescent / glow in the dark paint for the lights on the chevrons, instead of actual lights. I think it'll look ok.. I was also thinking of shining a spotlight on it, that night, too.
