A Star Trek revival has always been possible. Star Trek is one of the most successful brand names in marketing history (and yeah that IS how the suits think of it - Coca-Cola, Mickey Mouse, Star Trek). It's just been mis-managed, that's all. So now some of em think they can manage it better. It would have happened sooner or later. Even lying fallow, Star Trek is like having a big bag of money you aren't spending/investing. Why not do something with it? It's not like tribbles, it won't multiply on its own.
Honestly, I think the last production team was pretty good, they simply ran out of ideas towards the end, or at the very least, they were incapable of pushing the boundaries. Its the same team that gave us many good stories from STNG, DS9 and a couple of good movies. Voyager and Enterprise may have been more spotty quality-wise, but they had good episodes often enough. After awhile, any production team can develop "hardening of the arteries" (a David Gerrold term), and a new vision was needed.
In today's entertainment climate however, that production team was given the short end of the stick....movies have to have some cache', and that means well known actors, celebrities and a big budget. Even the producers themselves are celebs, and have gotten a lot of attention because of their recent track record. The result is an earlier "buzz" for this movie than ANY I have ever seen for Trek.
