Now, in case you don't know, I am an 18 year old senior in high school. I haven't encountered anyone else in my age range, so I guess I have some in-roads into a different set of social, uh, inclinations.
And, I have either good or bad news depending on how you view things.
Everyone I've talked to, mostly highschool or college-aged, has said they think the new Star Trek movie looks pretty cool. I know a couple of non-Trekkie people who actually want to see it.
The most impressive comment that I've heard is "I didn't even know it was Star Trek until it said so!"
I personally think that's a good thing, because it means that atleast the trailors have the ability to appeal to a larger audience beyond the folks who...well, who join internet forums devoted to discussing all things Trek.
It also holds the potential to finally make Trek cool again. Because, really, at its basic level Trek is entertainment- pure and simple entertainment. That's good- people will watch STXI for the explosions and the incredibly sexy Chris Pine, and then they'll go home and secretly rent an entire series on Netflix and then they will realize what a great treasure trough Trek is. And then it will get so popular that Paramount will have no choice but to make another series(after consulting Trekbbs, of course)...and all will be awesome.
And, as many of you have probably deduced, the movie so far has the same epic look and style as many of the big blockbuster hits- Iron Man, Transformers, heck, even Indiana Jones (recall the Lost Ark when boy Kirk is driving around and gets asked his name. Did anyone else think of Jones' boy scout days?).
Anyway. It seems the younger, under-25 crowd is interested.
