It’s About Time for Star Trek: The Musical

This week’s episode of Discovery, S04E5 The Examples, is written by Kyle Jarrow, who in addition to having written for television and film, is an award winning writer of Broadway musicals.

Jarrow’s involvement with Trek makes me feel that much closer to seeing my dream of Star Trek: The Musical become a reality.

There’ve been Broadway stars appearing on Trek from the start. Many Broadway folks have been a part of Trek, from guest spots to major roles. Just looking at Uhura alone, both the original legend Nichelle Nichols, and the newest successor Celia Rose Gooding, have brought Broadway clout to their Trek, from the beginning to the newest series. And going back to Uhura serenading Spock in Charlie X, music has always been in Star Trek’s blood.

‪‪I know ‪‪I could very well be alone in this, but ‪‪I really would love to see a Short Trek, or even a full length one-off Trek musical special. I want to see them make use of the opportunities they have to really IDIC around and, produce many new kinds of Treks with a variety of voices, storytelling methods, and mediums for Paramount+, and ‪‪I think a Trek musical done right could really work.

Five or six years ago there was an unofficial Trek stage musical set in the TOS era.
But I would like to see an official big-budget production. That would be fantastic.

Edit: Found it.

That’s awesome, thanks for sharing that!

Back in the 1990s there was a lot of talk about an official Star Trek musical, as a standalone thing, not a very special episode of a series. That's the way I'd like to see it go because I would like to be able to ignore its existence as much as possible, but people who want one could still have one. I would really not like a musical episode of any Trek TV series.

I've seen a locally produced Star Trek Musical put on by a local school drama group. It was seriously amazing. They went all out by the school hallway to look like a starship corridor, helped by the fact that the school itself already had some pretty futuristic hallways. Then they had some of the staff dressed up in-uniform greet guests and lead them down to the 'turbolift' aka elevator down to the auditorium where a set of the bridge was set up. It was a really great experience. The musical itself was based on the Frame of Mind episode.

Always thought Wrath of Khan could support a full-on Broadway musical. Beautifully framed for that.
