Species 8472 was unique and awesome; the Borg thought so, too. Then they couldn't really think of an adversary unique to Voyager that had any real fascination. TNG had the Borg, DS9 had the Dominion, and Voyager had..uh.. the Borg!

YYZ, "another anamoly [sic] in a show with far too many spacial anamolies [sic] and not enough substance" and "CGI pieces of crap," etc. -- it is a fact that one 8472 appeared as Boothby, but the rest of your post is your view, which I didn't come away with. I thought Species 8472 were formidable and interesting.
I disagree. They were never intended to remain Voyager's enemy; the Borg were the enemy. Voyager got caught on the wrong side of that argument.Voyager made a good bad guy and then began pulling it's teeth out.
Species 8472 were designed as being foes of the Borg -- and they were on the defensive. It didn't appear as though 8472 were inherently warlike; and they were not Voyager's natural enemies -- only by unfortunate circumstance. Like humans, 8472 could wage war; but Voyager had more in common with 8472 than the Borg. I thought they were quite interesting, and I'm glad that dynamic was added to the Borg conflict.Ok. they may be formidable.. I mean they were designed to be a new foe. They may be interesting, as they are not a typical bumpy forehead alien... but there is nothing else, nothing substantial about them, nothing dramatically interesting, nothing about their "society" that would make us look in some way at our own, and there is certainly no character to these things, no character dynamics ...They were just a foe for foe's sake, a ratings ploy so that "Scorpion" could be produced
And that's just the outcome of one sortie, in a war which had been going on for months. The complete casualties for the Borg after this conflict wound down would have been gigantic even after applying the most conservative multipliers to the figures above.BORG [OC]: Species 8472 has penetrated Matrix Zero-One-Zero, Grid Nineteen. Eight planets destroyed, three hundred twelve vessels disabled, four million, six hundred twenty-one Borg eliminated. We must seize control of the Alpha Quadrant vessel, and take it into the alien realm.
SEVEN: We understand.
What they leave behind is space, which is a function of the journey. Voyager wasn't trying to hold down any real estate there like the locals do.AT best, 8472, like most VOY villains, is good for one or two appearances, then after that, they lose something
Cain is a better leader then Janeway.
