I agree that mob mentality is frightening, a probably a good chunk of the people don't get it. But if this starts a conversation in the media and among some audience members then Colbert's comedy is closer to accomplishing his goal. His "wikiality" bit caused a lot of talk on the subject, both in the media and the audience. There usually is some small discussion after another thing gets named for him. I think this one might cause a similar, if not slightly more prevalent, discussion.
Of course, some will say it's harmless fun, others will focus on how Colbert is the harbinger of society's death. That's the nature of any sort of art, you can't control how it will be interpreted and how they'll react. Just hope the majority of people "get it."
