Isn't now impossible to even include Shatner?

This may be a silly question but....

If they even find a way to include Shatner, are they not prevented to do so because of the writer's stike? How can they write a part for him? Abrahms has already said they have to shoot with the current script with no changes. (just maybe some ad libs)

So isn't this situation all moot?

I imagine it would be possible if a version of the script included a cameo by the older Kirk and that material was set aside when negotiations fell through with Shatner and/or if the strike ends at a point in time that reshooting is still workable and if there's a rapprochement with Shatner.

That's a lot of conditions, though, and the real situation may be even more complex than that, so I think you're probably right that it's too late. In any case, when the full story about the making of this movie is gathered together, it will probably be fascinating.

Since no one outside the production company has any idea what this film is about, I would say nothing is impossible.

They can use anything that was put on paper prior to the strike. And believe me, if they even entertained the thought of including Shatner and Nimoy, the scenes were written a long long time ago. I'm sure they wrote a version of the story that included Nimoy And Shatner's participation,...along with other versions that took into account the possibility that neither actor would want to participate and sign onto the project.

I think they got lucky with Nimoy and Shatner just wants too much money because in his eyee, his part is too small to bother. He probably feels a cameo will give marquee value to the film and help the studio in the long run, so he wants to make it worth his while. They are filming through March. Don't count him out just yet.

^^^Well they keep saying Kirk dying in "Generations" is the reason for all this trouble in the first place. If that's the case, I doubt they have written anything at all to date. They might have floated around some ideas but an actual script? hmmm dont think so. I hope I'm wrong though.

"Isn't now impossible ..." What?!?! Learn to post an actual sentence.

^^Your right. I don't usually make a stupid mistake like that. Sorry for the horrocious grammar.

I agree with igrokbok.
If they had been thinking about this script along time ago and they met Shatner and Nimoy to talk about film, why wouldn´t they write a alternative script including Shatner and Nimoy?

But I think that the history is about Spocks (new and old) and even young Kirk, maybe, is not substantial to the film. So why would old Kirk be?

It's probably too late for him to have a role as big as Leonard Nimoy's; but hypothetically O&K could write in a Shatner scene after the strike and he films it late in the shoot.

So it's not impossible. It's just very improbable.

Don't feel bad, there're plenty around here who are worse and should know better.

There are only two ways it is possible:
A)He already is in the film, so they don't need to come up with a new line. Or...
B)The strike ends in time for them to write a scene in.

Just my honest opinion, but I don't think Kirk is needed for the film, and it will roll along just fine with out him.

The only scene I want to see Kirk in?

Kirk and Janice Rand in bed, both smiling from the 'after-glow', Kirk smoking a cig, and he says to her "Janice, If I wouldn't have known......You were so good, you actually raised the dead....,

I think Abrhams himself could posibly write in something, but he suports the strike. I also think that an older Kirk probably has no place in this movie.

I love Shatner, but, unless absolutely necessary, I think they should leave him out. Of course, I think Nimoy being in it is a bit of a mistake....

I just don't see the point.

This movie won't sink or sail based upon his participation. The number of Trek fans who will only see this movie if Shatner is in it are pretty low. A small percentage of Trek fans who, lets face it, will be a small percentage of the moviegoing audience (hopefully). Would have been nice to have him in, but looks like there is no room for him in this story - given that old Kirk is Dead. Dead. Dead. Off a bridge. Dead.

I know Shatner has oft said that this is a story problem. This much is true. But a story problem that would have demanded a large part of the film dedicated to it (a la Search for Spock), which I dont think TBTB wished to tell.

I agree with this decision 100 percent. This movie is about restarting the franchise, not fumbling around trying to correct the mistakes of a 13 year old movie...

No, it only "demands" it if you have to have an explanation. They can serve what they want on the plate and they don't have to explain anything. If one wants to look at the Trek universe as a "real" place, then you must also except that things happen beyong the 1 hour you see on screen. Kirk goes to the crapper. Spock sleeps. Days go by where there are no Godlike entities challenging the crew. If Shatner shows up, then the simple fact that he is on the screen tells us that SOMETHING happened that brought him back. It doesn't have to be spelled out for the very few who would even care.

If the movie works and the inclusion of Shatner leaves some old guard Trekkies scratching their heads, or Shat haters grumbling under their breath while the movie rakes in $200 million, who is going to cares? Certainly not JJ. Certainly not the studio. And most certainly, not me. I'll be like, "kirk is back, cool," then refill the popcorn bucket and enjoy the ride.
