Isle of Man - great place to live?

I head of this 'dirty British secret' on the Stewart show last night. I had never heard of the Isle of Man.

Interesting country with some very interesting un-European way of doing things.

Zero capital gains taxes, zero corporate taxes and apparently it's the 4th or 5th most likely country to return to the moon.

When can I move to this British/un-British paradise?

Sounds like paradise.
Yeah, a tiny island in the middle of cold waters, with terrible weather and nothing to do for the rest of your life, populated by a bunch of misfits and old people. But taxes are low, eh!

A real paradise!

I think it's a great place! Their TLD is .im which happen to be the last two letters of my last name, so thanks to them I made a great domain name hack a few months ago!

I ignore that sort of thing. If they want to spend the upkeep on two (or more) huge armies on a useless island to sit on the beaches, they are completely welcome to it. Until you own everything else of course.
But I had to question why they were there. Were they going to use the Isle of Man to invade Ireland while my armies were away in Scotland? I wasn't going to leave myself open to that sort of threat.

Strong bastards, those Norwegians. I had a horrible time removing them from northern Scotland too.

You see, the AI is useless at coordinating a naval invasion. If they've been wasting resources to build huge stacks of armies, then they are perfectly content to continue doing it. They tend to be really, really dumb strategists who like clicking the recruit button. I exploit that.

Also, if you don't have any land borders, they are more likely to agree to peace, which will make a Manx (or any other island-dwelling nation in Total War) invasion even less likely.

Hmmm... "Isle of Man". There's a joke to be made there, but perhaps I shall let it lie for now. ;)

The only thing I really know about it is that they issue their own stamps. Back when I collected stamps as a kid, and I had all of the Canadian ones that I could afford (or rather, that my father would pay for), I decided to pick a second country, and I picked the Isle of Man. Probably because they only had about 50 or so stamps in their entire history at that point, so I figured it would be easy.

Why on Earth not? It's been right there, all along. Where did you suppose these came from, anyway?

Just as well. All the world hates a not-quite-islandic pun. :p

try Jersey or Guernsey.

You can't just go and live in the Channel Islands, you have to have been born there, or related to someone born there, or married to someone born there

I believe that, somewhat absurdly, British citizens and members of EU countries do have the right to move to the Channel Islands (we don't need a passport or a visa to get in and can't be thrown out), but they have imposed restrictions on buying and renting property to get round this.

They have an entire welcome package more or less including a red carpet if you meet their HNWI criteria.

But on a more pedestrian level, if you work there you get all the tax perks of the place, and can live there too. If you have a substantive contract and can go on to demonstrate a commitment to the place, you can then meet their Housing Law requirements regarding purchase rather than renting. I did look into all this a while back, a while back, when a job opportunity arose there, as I mentioned upthread. I actually got the feeling from my preliminary research at the time that the system was quite malleable if you got to know the right (and few) people and convinced them of that, but perhaps I was reading too much into that particular aspect of things. This was all some years ago now, so things may have changed in the meantime, but I doubt something so fundamental has changed much.
