Very borderline case of child abuse; absolutely clear that the mother is an amoral monster. But then, she's a pageant mom, so that is to be expected. And there is a real cognitive dissonance in someone pushing their daughter to offer up her agony on the altar of beauty, when they themselves apparently can't even be asked to sacrifice that second slice of cheesecake.

Regarding the leg waxing, how many eight year olds (of either gender) have a serious amount of terminal hair? That's kind of weird. Then again, it's passing weird that women depilate their legs in the first place.

I've been saying this for years. There was an episode of NCIS where Dinozo fancied a good looking park ranger until he noticed she had body hair, and his reaction was borderline hysteria. I watched that and fervently hoped that wasn't what American men were actually like.

- The mother is a 34 year old English born woman who lives in San Francisco.

- the child's father died 4 years ago.

According to the Sun newspaper

Ms Campbell told The Sun that Britney had been injected four times in the last twelve months with 1-2ml of a saline and Botox solution each time.
"I know the correct amount to give her as I am a trained beautician," she said.
"I'd rather she be perfect and have a little frozen face. Some people say her eyebrows look a little pulled already but they look striking."
Britney received her first Botox treatment as an eight birthday present, and says they "used to hurt" but now she doesn't cry. Ms Campbell said Britney had to be kept home from school with a headache but had otherwise had no reaction to the procedure.
"She also has her virgin wax monthly, which gets rid of her fluffy leg hair and makes sure she wont develop pubic hair in the future," said Ms Campbell.
"It will save her a fortune in waxing when she's older."
Britney also wants breast enhancements and a nose job soon "so that I can be a star," the child said.

This should definitely be illegal. At a bare minimum, social services should take the child away. I was going to say that this woman deserves to be shot, but i figured she's not worth the ammo.

The fact that it's botox doesn't change much, in my opinion. Lots of things are dangerous if done incorrectly. I don't think that's an issue, as long as it's being done correctly AND there's a reasonable belief that the correctly done procedure is safe.

The two most important aspects of this are:

(i) Is there a law prohibiting use of botox on an a child? Is the procedure being done with the intention of annoying or harming the child?

(ii) Are the injections being given to the child against her will? Is the child mentally competent enough to understand what the procedure is? Is the child being made to suffer in a way she hasn't chosen?

Answers to the above would determine whether or not a claim of abuse is valid.

Actually, I think it is a case of sexualizing children. Later in the article the mother talked about waxing her daughter so pubic hair won't grow, which will help her later in life. This is also what caused me to believe this is a hoax, since waxing pre-pubescent children does no such thing. I hope it's a hoax. If not, this definately is sexual abuse because no adult has any business touching a child's genitals for any reason other than treatment of a medical condition, or something along those lines.

1) I don't know if there are laws regarding cosmetic procedures, but intent to harm is not a criteria for what is child abuse. Regardless of "intention" on the part of the adult, they look at actual damage or risk of damage to the child. I also thought botox could only be done by a doctor, but the mother claims to know how because she is a beautician. Do you (or anyone) know if this is true? Obviously I've never had it done and I know little about it.

2) A child that age can't truly give consent for these things, this is why a parent or guardian is legally entitled to making all medical decisions for the child. It's a matter of whether the mother was making a good judgment on behalf of her daughter, not whatever she told her daughter so the girl would "choose" it. Kids this age don't come up with these ideas on their own.
