IS THERE EVEN A FUTURE |???????

The pending Trek film might well kill the franchise for many years... we all know just how bad Trek prequels generally suck.
There's been one so there's not enough to even find a trend...not even with a microscope.

It's a movie. Action/adventure is the way to go.

My point exactly. All space opera movies can be these days are action-adventure. Where are the pretentious 2001 wannabes, I implore thee?

"Pretentious?" Where are the ambitious sf movies?

You're more likely to find something intelligent or even with a clever POV on the SCIFI channel than in the movie theater - and that's pretty damning.

Well see - Trek as of now is "dead" in that there's no on going series. It would stay that way were it not for this film, at least for awhile.

It was always an pulpy action adventure that contained a dollop of philosophizing - check "The Cage" if you doubt me.

I like it better than Babylon 5, but it's not fair to compare it to Dune. Dune is simply too brilliant.

"Wagon Train to the Stars" is what Trek is supposed to be. Of course I never watched Wagon Train; a better way to say it would be Bonanza to the Stars or Baywatch in Space. Sorry, more like Law and Order in Space. No, sorry. They basically don't make Bonanza anymore.

Some people want Trek to be pure science fiction I guess. The problem is pure science fiction is not popular. Sure it's has it's success here and there; but always short lived and limited.

Here are my examples of pure science fiction that had some success; the biggest exception being 2001 Space Odyssey; which was a cultural phenomenon; or basically a good movie to see high in 1969.

Gattaca
Logan's Run
Children of Men
THX1138
Planet of the Apes
Soylent Green
Star Trek the Motion Picture
AI
Minority Report
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Outbreak
Ghostbusters 2
An Inconvenient Truth
Leonard Part 6

pure science fiction

Is that some euphemism for science fiction devoid of humanity?

Gattaca - I can see that.
Logan's Run - maybe, at its heart being human seemed the fabble
Children of Men - I'll give you that.
THX1138 - don't remember it.
Planet of the Apes - I agree.
Soylent Green - Ok
Star Trek the Motion Picture - not really but it did have aspirations for this.
AI - ok
Minority Report - ok
Close Encounters of the Third Kind - it was all about the people.
Outbreak - ok
Ghostbusters 2 - huh?!
An Inconvenient Truth - does Al Gore know he produced science fiction?
Leonard Part 6 - Can't recall it.

Essentially what I said, only I did so more self-deprecatingly. :vulcan:

I've seen no evidence of this. Kindly point me to anything produced by the Sci-Fi Channel lately that is as good as, say, A Scanner Darkly.

Its looking okay as far as I know. It'll be far better once a few things are PERMANENTLY settled.

[*] Once G.W. Bush is out of office.

[*] U.S. / Canadian Immigration Officials finally decide on a permanent criteria for frequent crossings for employment or family-based reasons: biometric ID's, passports, drivers' licenses, provincial photo ID, or all-of-the-above.

[*] We stop hearing about Rosie O'Donnell seeking Dubya's impeachment or The View is cancelled altogether.

[*] Dubya's own trained monkeys in uniform FINALLY assasinate him in a plausible "friendly fire" accident or simply decide to look the other way & go on a convenient coffee break as a suspicious vehicle pulls up during a presidential visit.

[*] Britney Spears & the rest of "The Bimbos Of The Apocalypse" stop getting embroiled in heavy duty legal / marital snafu's.

Insofar as Science Fiction is concerned, I'm developing a loyalty for the comedy/drama series "Eureka". I can't wait for the next season debut of "Stargate: Atlantis" in January on Space.
