When you spend years creating and nourishing something -- anything -- you become attached to your work, and you form ideas about how best to do that work. To many who worked on the show, I'm sure that MST3K was more than just "a puppet show mocking movies."

It seems to me that it's just Jim Mallon being a dick and not so much any drama between Mike and Joel.

Look, Joel made the show. Mike was his head writer. Joel left and the show continued on. There became a split among fans over who was better. Mike has stuck with the riffing concept since the end of the show and now Joel has started to do his own thing to reclaim the idea. I see it as pretty normal rivalry that happens when someone else becomes known for your thing. There's gotta be some conflict there, but I doubt it's serious or malicious.

Joel had considered writing his own MST3K-inspired book where he gets to the crashed remains of the Satellite of Love, gets it working again, and then flies off to defeat The Borg.

Frankly, the Rifftrax/Cinematic Titanic stuff doesn't do it for me. It was like magic when they channeled their genius through their characters (and I'm including Joel and Mike, even though their characters shared the same name with their real life personaes). If I want to see a bunch of middle aged regular guys make fun of bad movies, I'd hang out with my friends.

Wake me when everyone makes nice and do a genuine MST3K reunion. You know it's gonna happen. There's too much money and a still huge fanbase at stake.

I don't think there's any "bad blood" between Mike and Joel, nothing I've seen suggests this. Most of it seems preceived like the "bad blood" between Shatner and Stewart. I mean, Joel and Mike are pretty much a Kirk and Picard type of situation.

It's true, Shatner & Stewart did get along really well. But there are examples of genuine rivalries in this sort of thing, like Tom Baker vs. every other Doctor. (To my knowledge, Tom Baker has never shared the stage with a fellow Doctor. Even when he appears at the same conventions, he's always in another room on another floor, as opposed to Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison, & Colin Baker who have appeared together on numerous occasions.)
