Is there any show like this elsewhere?

There's a German comedy show (of which I'm a big fan) called Kalkofes Mattscheibe that recently celebrated its 15th anniversary. I wonder whether this show is really that unique in the world as it appears to be.
This is how it works: the show consists of various clips. In each clip, a short excerpt of a tv programme is shown. Then, the comedian appears in the original tv clip (using the blue/green screen technique) either as himself, commenting on what was shown, or costumed as one or more of the protagonists, parodying them to show what the programme really is about. His texts are usually well crafted but contain plenty of swear words both old and newly created, innuendo and obscenity.

Here's a clip from the show (about a ridiculous tv ad). Since most of you won't understand what's being said, it won't be particularly funny, but it will give a good impression of how this show works.

So, my question is this: Is there any other show like that in the world? The idea is simple enough and it can be done quite inexpensively, so I can't believe no one else has done it.

Well there's MST3K (Mystery Science Theater 3000). If you've never heard of it, the idea is that the characters are watching some funky old terrible B movie and they have a hilarious running commentary about it. It's very well known in America and a lot of people around here are fans (including me).

You just haven't lived till you've seen MST3K's Manos: Hands of Fate. :D Other favorites of mine are Hercules Unchained, Sidehackers, Mitchell, Eegah and Ator. And the one with the guy wearing a bear suit with a TV on his head (can't recall the title).

The official website.

I've heard of MST3K, Temis. :) Thanks for the suggestions which episodes to watch.
(The guy who does Kalkofes Mattscheibe was involved in translating and subbing the MST3K movie, by the way. I've seen it an unhealthy number of times.)

I'll check out TV Burp, but it looks more like another show here, TV Total (of old). Does Harry Hill ever copy himself into the clips?

Harry Hill actually recreates certain key scenes with stand-ins for the leading characters for that scene and specific camera angles to hide the characters' faces, then brings himself into the scene. Often he brings in the actual minor background actors from the show to the fore too, with humorous results.

Harry Hill's TV Burp very often does that sort of thing during its episodes.
yes I was going to say that.

and yes Harry Hill is in the "clips" sometimes, but alot of the times, its done via Harry & his crew building a set that looks similar to the one on screen, and showing the back of actors heads.

And to make the illusion more effective, each skit is sometimes concluded with him "walking back" to his studio seat, as if he had just popped off set to deliver his own form of justice in the clip being shown... :guffaw:

Harry Hills method works quite well, when it is intercut with the footage from the actual TV show

here is one example of the method Harry uses

and if you have been left confused by Brits saying

"I like person A, but I also like person B, but which is best there is only one way to find out

FIGHT!!!"

on the web, watch the whole video, it is an example of that.

Yeah, I've already seen a vid with a fight in it. :)

Looks like fun, but it seems to me to be quite different from Kalkofes Mattscheibe, it's a whole different format, more like a late night show but only dealing with tv.

well I dont think you will find a show exactly like Kalkofes Mattscheibe just one that is like it, and TV Burp might be the closest you will get.

Harry Hill's definitely not late night material.

The people behind Mystery Science Theater 3000 have a website. It's www.rifftrax.com Same concept as MST3000 and just as funny. You can watch samples of the films on the site and order dvd's also.

dont quote me on this but I think Harry Hill used to be on later at night before ITV realised that despite the odds they had created a hit, and moved it to primetime.

Perhaps. It's certainly fun to find out about foreign shows, so I'm happy about suggestions.

What I've seen so far does make him seem to be quite family-friendly (unlike Kalkofe, who is still stuck in his anal phase). But I referred to late night shows due to the setting (sitting at a desk, showing clips and commenting on them, live sketches).

the Charlie Brooker show for C4 might do something like this, he does review TV & the TV industry for the BBC already, but on C4 hes going to do the same thing but also interview celebrity's

I like Charlie Brooker's style. It's annoying they peep out the more severe swear words, though. When is his show usually on? Can't you say those swear words at all on British TV?

I think they just bleep out (most of) Charlie's swearing for some reason (unless it was for comedy value) - the other swearing from contributors and the TV shows themselves is kept unbleeped.
