Is there any reason McGann couldn't have starred in nuWho?

^ Yeah, for a first appearance, he did very well. He didn't have the time to build up his character the way most of the other actors did. I would have liked to see more of his Doctor. But I think Eccleston was great and am glad we got him to relaunch the new show. Hell, I'd like to see more of his Doctor too.

I still hope that McGann's Doctor will be shown onscreen again though.

McGann's had quite a run in the Big Finish audio plays - some 30 stories in the main range, plus four dedicated seasons of his own. And he's one of my favorite Doctors now, thanks to his performance in the audios.

I realize in the states the feeling was that the Doctor Who tv-movie was a failure. But from my understanding it was a pretty big hit in the UK.

Looking at that, and considering many people who dislike the movie say that McGann was the best part about it, is there any reason he was never approached to reprise the role as the Doctor?

I mean there's nothing about the first season that necessitates that the Doctor of that series be the ninth Doctor. It could have easily been McGann's Doctor and nothing would have changed drastically.

At the very least they'd only be on regeneration 10 now and still have some more room until they have to stretch credibility and explain why the Doctor can regenerate after his 13th life.

I think number 13 should be somewhat a look-alike for William Hartnell, implying that somehow the Doctor has come full circle, and essentially started all over again, with 12 wholly new regenerations ahead of him. And because time isn't fixed, and since the times and circumstances of these 12 new regenerations won't be the same as they originally were, these subsequent regenerations won't necessarily need to mimic any of the previous 12 incarnations.

I had thought of that same idea as well. Lets face it if and when it comes to it they'll get passed the 12 regeneration limits.

1.>Perhaps at the start of the time war all the Time Lords where given a new full regeneration of 12, so if it didn't overide the current cycle it would mean that the Doctor has 16 regenerations. If start from a new it means we still have 9 more regnerations.

2.>If and when we reach the 13th Doctor dying, just have him regenerate, say "That wasn't supposed to happen" and leave it at that.

Sometimes things are best left unexplained. The general audiance might not care that much, as for the Who fans would they rather have no Who at all on TV rather than have the show break one of the rules?

In one of the Big Finish talkbacks McGann said he would have turned down the role if asked citing the long, brutal tv production schedule.

It would be nice to see McGann playing the Doctor if only for a special. If you can have the 5th Doctor who spent some time interacting with other Timelords on Gallifrey having a short adventure with the 10th Doctor then why can't the 7th Doctor show up?

'He's done audio roles so he still has nterest in the role although an audio story wouldn't take up as much of his time.

McCoy?

McCoy turning up would at least have more recognition than McGann...

I'm pretty sure he meant to put 8th. I think any Who fan worth their salt would know that McGann was the eighth Doctor :)

Besides, if you forget it's in my signature for crying out loud.

I wonder if they'd still have him in the coat and 'wig' or they'd have the 'unofficial' new look Mcgann sported at a convention, which was a transition between him and Eccleston.

Four words: Real clothing. No costumes.

I rather liked his outfit in the movie.

But I'm curious about this updated look he sported at a convention. Are there any pictures of it?

McGann didn't mind the costume. It's WIG he hated. I heard that's why he doesn't like covers from Big Finish.

Just done purely for fun really. There's some YouTube footage of McGann at the New Zealand convention, where he showed off the look he's more comfortable with. He basically said it wasn't finished and that it needs a shirt, other things but that he's taken with the blue coat and revamped screwdriver.

You know I still prefer the Old 8th Doctor look even if McGann hates it. It just somehow fits with his character. The new look makes the 8th doctor look like a bum and not a sophisticated Victorian gentleman (which goes with McGann's performance).

I imagine he's supposing any return from him, will be set during or immediately after the destruction of Gallifrey. An older version of the Eighth Doctor, because McGann likely isn't confident he can pull off the youthful, footloose and fancy free guy who pranced around with Grace in the park. Whatever future gathering of Doctors, he'll probably be filling the void Christopher Eccleston doesn't want to fill, with the Time War being somewhat rawer to this Doctor.

I do agree the costume needs more stuff that reminiscent of the old one though. A wing collared shirt, a waist coat and a fob watch. Those sort of frills to make it more Doctorish and less McGann in the street. Grow his hair out a bit more, with some sideburns. That stripdown aspect, crew cut hair and a v-necked jumper, was what I disliked about the Ninth Doctor's look. Guy down the pub. Dad picking his kids up from school. Not guy from another planet, who doesn't quite fit in and who's dress sense is all over the shop. Something that was in style a century or two back. Something else worn alongside that's now, but the two things shouldn't ought to go together.

I wouldn't call the 8th doctor youthful, footloose or fancy free. He's grown a lot as a character since the movie. The best way I describe him is one of those mature adventurers who isn't burned out by going on adventures but still knows it's dangerous (or more like the 11th doctor I guess). I like the old look since it shows both maturity and timelessness with a bit of brogue mischievousness ala Lord Byron. The new look just makes the character looks tired but I agree it fits better with a post Time War Doctor.

I think the reaction was mixed, but me personally I was glad just seeing Paul play along. Maybe that's all it was and if he were asked to return, Steven Moffat, Russell T. Davies or whoever writes the episode, would have other ideas. In Time Lord robes or in a kind of battle armour and brandishing a wizard's pikestaff, for all we know.

Remember, Google is your friend.

It's not your friend when you're a lazy git ;)

Personally not a fan of that look. Part of the appeal of the 8th Doctor for me (aside from McGann's wonderful performance) is the look.

Although as pointed out it is closer in appearance to Eccleston's ninth Doctor.
