Is There any Love for Colm Meany's acting skills?

Sometimes he was a little stiff and wooden, but sometimes he was a tremendous actor. Where the Meany love?

Seeing as a little stiff and wooden was how he was playing O'Brien, I'd say he's one of the best of the cast. Always solid.

You won't have to look far to find fans of his.

I saw him in a strange, Psychedelic Western a while back. He didn't seem at all like O'Brien.

Well I voted for him in the thread of best actor in DS9. I was apparently one of the few, but I honestly don't see why the overwhelming majority preferred Kira and Odo. I thought they were way more one-note and Colm showed a lot more range, especially in those "O'Brien must suffer" episodes.

I think he's great. It's an understated performance, but...really, I can't think of a thing that I'd change about it. He's wonderful.

inorite? the only person that beats him in my book is andrew robinson. :cardie:

Meany is a fantastic actor. I really enjoy any scene when he's in it. I would agree he's about the best actor that DS9 had. I'm not sure, but he may have been the most experienced too.

I thought he was a rock solid performer. He was playing an understated character, so he had to keep his reactions understated to fit. He could say more with an eye roll and the set of his mouth than I've seen some actors say with a mouthful of lines. I love him.

Huge fan of Meany's work. He manages to be great in silly fare like Con Air and Under Siege, and he elevates already great material like DS9 and Layer Cake.

And I'm sure I've said it before, but I will take the time to reiterate it now: Nobody, shy of maybe Samuel L. Jackson, curses as well as Colm. Between his delivery and the awesome Irish brogue... pure awesome in a 4 letter format.

I have to say this:

One of the most impressive roles I've seen Colm Meany in was something he was in for only two episodes: Law & Order: Criminal Intent. He played a crooked judge. I don't know why but I always liked how he played it.

Trivia: They worked in a Trek reference in the episode. The character he played tore his rotator cuff while kayaking.

I loved Meany's performance. O'Brien was definitely more of an "everyman" than most of the other characters, and his acting was appropriately subdued. Plus, he was also good at conveying pain, as we saw in those "O'Brien torture" episodes that seemed to occur rather frequently. So whether he was just an ordinary man going about his business or an ordinary man in a not-so-ordinary situation, I felt that Meany always had the range and the skills to be effective in the role.

Very well-said...I agree. :)

I've noticed that people tend to say that an actor is "one-note" when it really means that they don't like the character as much as some others and were not emotionally invested enough in them.

Anyway, 12 people voted for Meaney in the "Best Acting - Who Wins?" poll , so apparently there is love for his acting. I did not vote for him, but I thought Colm Meaney was one of the best actors in DS9. DS9 had quite a few actors who were perfect in their roles and it is difficult to really judge which one is better than the other, and any attempt really turns into a "who's your favorite character" topic.

I've never ranked the DS9 actors or tried to determine my favourite, but if I did he would probably be in the top three. He's the sort of actor where you never notice that he's acting.

I voted for him in that DS9 poll and I think he's terrific, there's a naturalistic quality to his acting that I really like. Of all Star Trek actors he's probably got one of the best records outside Trek, and that doesn't surprise me at all.

Having seen a few of the early TNG shows lately, it's amazing how great O'Brien already was back then. I love that character.

Nice. :rommie: That pesky rotator cuff.

Sure, some people want to debate waterboarding, but what about poor CM? Guy gets his arm half-ripped off, like clockwork. Knowing its coming must make it worse.

Starting to think there was a Cardassian on the writing staff.:cardie:

Thanks. :) I was hoping somebody would get the reference (which I'm assuming you did).

Not in my case. I admit I hated Kira and Odo in the early episodes (especially Kira - I wished they'd kill her off!), but over time I came to like both and I still thought they were one-note because they never seemed subtle to me. The same goes for Andrew Robinson, the other apparent fan favourite.

All three of them just always seemed to speak in the same theatrical tone all the time, which made it less believable to me when they were meant to convey any emotion besides confidence. Oddly enough, even when they were struggling with personal issues, they managed to sound annoyingly cocky to me. It was hard to root for them or feel sorry for them when they always sounded so overbearing. Meany, on the other hand, showed vulnerability very convincingly when required to.

I never saw his acting as stiff or wooden. I think he's great.

In fact, of all the characters on TNG and DS9 I think he comes off as the most human.

Seriously, is there anybody who dislikes the Chief? I don't think I have ever encountered someone on the trekbbs boards who didn't like him. And that is rare.
