Thanks ChristopherI think sales figures are confidential. Writers can get that information about their own sales, but I don't think it's for public consumption.
I remember in “Voyages Of Imagination” that ‘Nathan Archer’ talked about how his reason for writing “Ragnarok” and “Valhalla” was that he needed to establish the ‘Nathan Archer’ pseudonym in the sci-fi field so that publishers could see how well his books sold so that he could get own sci-fi stories published.I did a writing masterclass last weekend and the presenter said that sales figures used to be confidential to those within a particular publisher, but... recent changes means that (at least in Australia, and I assume she meant internationally?) all commercial publishers now have access to sales figures for all books.
Still not for public access, but it also means that if a new author's book flops badly for one company, they can no longer just pop up at a new publisher without a track record. (Of course, books can flop for all kinds of reasons, often not the fault of the writer.) Interesting times.
