Is the World worth it?

The Borg Queen

Rear Admiral
When you look at the state of today's culture, a society that cares more about profits, commercialisation and litigation where nobody has to take responsibility if they can blame someone else, or where making money is more important that actually providing real results and making a proper difference, is this world really worth anything at all?

Moral Guardians dictate to everyone else how to live their lives because it offends someone else, so they try to oppress or suppress another's right to live their life without harming anyone else.

Big companies like the pharmaceuticals, who only research new medications to save lives, not for the ability to ease suffering, but to make money because they know what they've discovered is so important, that people will pay almost any price for it. So they patent the naturally occurring chemicals they've discovered so that other companies who are trying to save lives, can't take away their profit margins.

Even throughout Human history, nothing much has ever really changed. Corrupt organisations, be they political or religious, that deliberately stifle learning, advancement and opportunities just so that they can remain in power over people for their own cruel agenda, regardless of the benefit or damage they cause to those who rely on them for their own lives. All for the benefit of the small few at the very top of the chain, while so many innocent people get caught in the crossfire and trampled underfoot.

Why is this the nature of the world we live in, and why would anyone choose to live in such a world?

^That is not the nature of the world we live in. The world just is. It is, however, the nature of the humans that live on that world.

The answer is no, the world isn't worth it. If Earth was hit by an asteroid tomorrow and all life was wiped out, the loss to the universe would be insignificant.

I believe the world is worth it. Every life deserves a chance.
I believe it would be the universe's loss if we were wiped out.
We bring heat and awareness to cold and passivity.

I couldn't care less if 99% of the world got wiped out tomorrow.

Infact i'm a firm believer that our civilisation needs a fresh start. I pray for the day we are hit with an Asteroid and the worlds population falls to about a thousand people.

OK then, I'll give you my sister's number. Check back with me afterwards and let's see if we've got it all sorted out.

You'll feel a lot better after you're finished college or turn 25...whichever comes first.

Agreed. I had a little fun in college, but it was hard work and I was your typical broke student. Grad school was worse. I worked all day and went to school 3 nights a week. I still didn't have anything to show for it because all my extra time and money went to school.

I got out of grad school at 25 and life definitely has been much better since. I've got a good job, a nice place to live, a few extra bucks to buy nice things, a great wife to come home to, and a dog to lay on my feet at night.

Life's pretty damned good as far as I'm concerned. I've got my problems and worries, but it could be much worse.

If you dwell on the negative stuff, you'll find a way to stay miserable.

Well, you're right about one thing. Most people are full of nothing but hot air.

No, I don't think the world is worth it either. But I wouldn't want to wipe out everything. I and three other people deserve to live.

I was really starting to feel like that, then I voted, then I saw my President
take office and begin running things. I now see hope.

When he made his speech about responsiblity to your neighbor and the country
and all that... it was the first time someone saying that really resonated
with me, and I felt I couldn't let him down.

My Captain has commanded me and I feel under his leadership I can make
better of this world, at least the parts of it within my reach.

I don't think so - I'm 30, I finished University 10 years ago and I think the world should be nuked. :vulcan:
I would gladly return to college any time. My life has become an even bigger waste of time since I finished school. At least in school I could pretend to have a purpose.

And they call me the cynic...

It is the nature of the world we live in because of what you said above about people wanting to live their lives how THEY want.

I doubt we would have half the problems in society regarding poverty, war, education, crime, civility, etc if people didn't worry about doing what they wanted to do, but doing what is right.

You call it "moral guardians dictating to everyone else how to live their lives because it offends others", while more often the offended party is actually the one who is being told about a different way to live and rejects it out of selfishness.

For me though, I honestly believe that for the most part, people are good and in the end, that good will prevail.

We live in a beautiful world. Nature is fantastic and amazing. The people who lived before us created some wonderful art and artifacts, they made amazing discoveries and created great civilisations. Today's world has hardship and distress, but also its own triumphs and wonders. Sometimes it's really very hard to see the good in things, and sometimes there are moments when the breathtaking wonder of it all can be quite overwhelming. Some days I think the world would be better if mankind died out over night and sometimes I think mankind is a work of art in itself. I know something, if space aliens arrived and tried to take over our world or take its people hostage, I'd be on the front line defending it.

Lets see.

We've got an unparallelled communication system and access to information even our recent ancestors could scarcely dream of.

We've eliminated or greatly diminished scores of the most common and deadly and debilitating diseases in the world.

World literacy rates are at an all time high, and child mortality rates at an all time low.

There are fewer regional conflicts going on right now in the world than at any other time since the 19th century.

I won't even get into mankind's innumerable artistic and scientific achievements.

Does some stuff suck? Sure, but in my opinion there are far more positives than negatives. You people need to start getting more variety in your news and more perspective on life if you really think your own species "deserves" to go extinct or that we're somehow getting "worse off" as a species. Damn near anything you can think of is actually getting better under any kind of objective measure. If you want to get hung up on the "immorality of society", I assume you'd rather live as a serf under an aristocracy in the 1500s? Perhaps you'd rather be a coal miner or a fish monger in 1850 England? Enjoy the freedom!
