In Hinduism, I believe the equivalent of a supreme essence is the Brahman -- sometimes referred to as Purusha -- the highest universal principle and the ultimate reality in the universe. This is not the same entity as the creator God in the Trimurti (Hindu Trinity) known as Brahmā.

Ātman (/ˈɑːtmən/; Sanskrit: आत्मन्) is a Sanskrit word that means inner self, spirit, or soul.[1][2] In Hindu philosophy, especially in the Vedanta school of Hinduism, Ātman is the first principle,[3] the true self of an individual beyond identification with phenomena, the essence of an individual. In order to attain Moksha (liberation), a human being must acquire self-knowledge (atma jnana), which is, according to Advaitins, to realize that one's true self (Ātman) is identical with the transcendent self Brahman.

Just another form of teleology - a belief that the universe has a goal or purpose. If everything that can happen does happen, perhaps some instantiations of universes can appear to have motivation and sapience as can entities that are part of them. No overarching plan or cause for the multiverse though, methinks.

Slouches toward Bethlehem to be born?"

I just completed Asimov's excellent Foundation's Edge where they speak of creating a Galaxia, a single macro-consciousness of which every thing in the Milky Way is conscious and is a part of it. Galaxia would be an extension of Gaia which is a single planet which has achieved planetary-level consciousness.

Perhaps a universal consciousness may have to be created/evolved?

In Christianity, that's akin to the dualist or gnostic heresy of the Cathars who identified their evil and good gods with the old testament god and Jesus.

The Demiurge (Old Nobodaddy).

Borges’ short story about the masked Dyer of Merv had an interesting theology
