Is the Myrka really that bad?

Having just watched Warriors of the Deep I have to admit I found the Myrka more convincing than either the Sea Devils- whose costumes were so ill fitting at least one of them had his helmet over his eyes the whole time- or the Silurians who had no facial expressions, walked stiffly, and seemed to be channelling Cybermen!!

Plus the Myrka got to go hand to hand with Ingrid Pitt

Myrka: Yes, it really was that bad.
Pitt: So was she.

Result: Awesome Cheese!

:D

The thing I really, really hate. The thing that grates on me more than anything else, more than any oversized-pantomime-horse/Myrka, is the Silurians referring to themselves and the Sea Devils by their human-given names. i.e They actually call themselves "Silurians" and their "Sea Devil Brothers".

I mean, humans (and the Doctor) were but a gnat on a pimple on the arse of their whole multi-million-year-old existence, and they regard us as little more than johnnie-come-lately-monkeys - yet they stoop to calling themselves by the layman's names we (or the Doctor) gave them.

Thats what makes me really wanna kick the screen in. The Myrka is tame by comparison (and actually quite a good laugh).

I agree, Captain Pike. I absolutely hated how they began to refer to themselves by those terms, especially after The Third Doctor told Jo in The Sea Devils that the term "Silurians" was inaccurate in the first place. :scream:

But, yes, the Myrka really was that bad. :p

The Myrka was really that bad. The Sea Devils and Silurians were horrible in this story as well. I'm so glad I only watched it once, I don't think my Blake's-7-loving mind can comprehend the horrendous costumes used in this episode; I can even stand the big red bug in The Harvest of Kairos, but the Myrka just plain sucks.

At one Dr Who convention, two people did a parody of the Myrka using a couple of cardboard boxes and the curtains from the hotel's bedrooms!

Ha ha, it does make the Kairos monster look good!

I dunno, maybe it's because it's so long since I'd seen it, and so long that I'd been hearing how horrible it was, somehow I think I actually expected it to be Dobbin from Rentaghost so it ended up not being as bad as my imagination had, well, imagined!

That's nothing. In the original draft, the Silurians landed in a spaceship from their native planet, Siluria!

I like the Myrka. There were some problems in the execution... but the design was pretty solid.

I have to agree with what was said above. I was more annoyed with the Silurians calling the Sea Devils, "Sea Devils." Was saturday morning cartoon material.

Overall, I think the story gets more abuse than it deserves.

I agree with the dvd commentary, which suggests the dodgy effects wouldn't have been so bad if the lighting wasn't so, well, bright, and the editing better.
