Why would they need to get their dilithium from a remote outpost a thousand light-years beyond Federation space? Heck, Movie Delta Vega has to be between Vulcan and Earth, so why can't it get its dilithium the same place Vulcan and Earth do?

Why did anyone need to get their dilthium that far out?

I assume it was a robotic station set up as a resource for future long-range exploration ships.

Really? what's the "Crier in Emptiness" Easter Egg?

When the crew is trying to pick up transmissions from the ships at Vulcan, there's a passage describing the static they pick up instead, "as if somewhere a transmitter was crying in emptiness." So not the same kind of Easter egg as yours, just a name drop.

I'm about halfway through, and I've caught a couple of Alan Dean Foster Star Trek Easter Eggs -- he's slipped in namechecks for "In (Thy) Image" and "Crier in Emptiness." The latter being one of the Peter Pan Records kid stories Foster penned back in 1974.

Really? what's the "Crier in Emptiness" Easter Egg?

I ask only because a) I own "Crier" and treasure it as one of my prize possessions and b) I put in an Easter Egg from "Crier" of my own into A Singular Destiny -- which means, amusingly, that there are two Star Trek novels released this year that refer to that rather obscure old comic/record.....

Page 110, near the bottom: "Unrecognized pings and strange electronic stutters, as if somewhere a transmitter was crying in emptiness."

It's not exact, but I'll bet ADF didn't come up with those words by accident. It made me smile.

BTW, I wish someone would release those old stories on CD -- until they do, I have to content myself with the scratchy transfers I made from vintage vinyl. Some of which have the "pings" telling me when to turn the page. Hehe!

This book is really getting some attention -- in addition to the $35 limited edition signed hardcover reprint coming from Premiere Collectibles, I just discovered, via their website, that the Science Fiction Book Club is also doing a hardcover reprint -- at a much more economical $12.99. Being the collector mega-geek that I am, I shall now have to purchase copies of both reprint editions. In duplicate.

I finished the novel and I liked it.I think it's nice that there's an audio versison of the book. Also a limited hardback autographed copy for fans too.

Speaking of "easter eggs" in the book - anyone notice who is being assigned to the Drake (page 81, second line)?

Wonder if this is just for fun, or if it implies another difference in this timeline versus the "prime" ST timeline?

As to why you cant find it in a search -- ?? It comes up for me. In fact, it comes up twice. Once on it's own, and once in a bundle with Shatner/Reeves-Stevenses' "Collision Course"

Picked this up from K-Mart today. It's a little disappointing that there is no foreword or afterword. I would have liked to hear something from the author, scriptwriters, a bit on the making of the film - anything.

Some of the dialogue is quite different to the film, and not necessarily for the better. I enjoy ADF's logs, but I'm not sure if this film translates well to a novel (certainly not one written under the time constraints he would have been under).

Picked it up the other day, read it all in one sitting last night. I couldn't put it down. Now I'm going to have to go see the movie again, but once it does leave theaters, this book will hold me over...for a while.

Well, as you say, the book was written under tight time constraints. There was no opportunity for any extras.

I was wondering why Foster was chosen rather than JM Dillard again? I'm not complaining he's a fantastic writer but who chose him? Pocket? The screenwriters? I heard they treated him like a rock star when he attended a screening of the actual flick so it makes me wonder if it wasn't their idea or JJ's.
