Is The Mini-Series Taken Good?

Aike

I rented the first two parts of Steven Spielberg´s mini-series Taken, and found the first part quite boring and slow. Does it get better? Any views of the show would be appreciated.

I can vouch for it getting no better for the rest of it, I watched the whole thing waiting for it to get better, and it didn't.

^ Yeah, that. Hugely disappointing.

The aliens, (typical greys, nothing interesting) are trying to breed human alien hybrids. Not out of some plan to conquer earth, but because they have developed beyond compassion, niceness and general fuzzyness.

Deciding they need these attributes, they are kidnapping people to half-inch their DNA and introduce it to their own species.

At least, I think that was what it was all about. I can't really remember, it was a while back I saw it. And I literally can not be bothered looking on Wiki to check.

That's how dull Taken was. It has induced Wiki apathy in me.

The running joke after this first aired was that the only thing Taken was the audience. And not in a good way.

Even the (rather generous amount of) pretty boys wasn't enough to help dull the pain.

It always surprises me how much people didn't like this series. I love it, and re-watch my DVDs every couple years or so. There are a couple installments in the middle that are too slow and less relevant to the main story, but on the whole I find it very entertaining. :techman:

The first few episodes were good, and the last one was too. But they stretched it way too much in the middle.

It's noteworthy mainly for being how Joel Gretsch became known to genre fandom. Great performance from him. :bolian:

I thought it was bland, predictable, boring nonsense to be quiet honest with you. Very disappointing.

The remake is better, they got Liam Neeson onboard and changed the aliens to eastern Europeans.

Are you talking about the recent movie also named Taken? That was a remake? I didn't know that, just thought it had the same title.

As to the OP's question: I must be in the minority. I enjoyed the miniseries. In fact, I enjoyed it so much, that, at first I had it on tape, then bought the DVD set. I agree with the guys who say it starts out slow, it does, but it gets better as it goes on.

I guess I'm also in the minority in that I liked it too. But if you find the first two parts boring and slow, then you probably won't like the later installments, which I thought kind of dragged. I definitely preferred the earlier episodes (the ones with Joel Gretsch -- Temis is right, he's great in this, playing a really vile character, the kind you love to hate), but I thought the later ones had some merit as well, even if they were less interesting and kind of slow at times.

I find myself torn over the actress who played Mary. Her mannerisms and facial quirks get quite annoying, but then it ends up giving the character some poignancy in the end. She was truly cut from the same cloth as her grandfather, though. Tough bird. I just find myself wondering how it would have come across with a different actress in the role.

Another vote for "beyond terrible"!

For all the hype with Spielberg being behind it... it was just so damn boring. Nothing interseting ever happened. I don't think I made it all the way through the series, maybe just halfway. It's one of those traumatic experiences that my mind just went ahead and blocked, apparently.

It was okay, but it really doesn't pick up steam and the earlier half is better then the latter. Joel Gretsch, as said, is great in it though.

I had honestly assumed that the Captain had been replaced by an alien at first and THAT was why he was such a jerk, killing his old girlfriend and marrying his CO's daughter for a promotion. So he could keep the project under alien control.

Didn't realize til later, he really was just a power-hungry jerk.

Are you talking about the recent movie also named Taken? That was a remake? I didn't know that, just thought it had the same title.

That response made me  so much!

Why? I haven't seen Neeson's movie and was honestly confused.

Don't worry, it was a very lame attempt at humour. The titles of the series and the film are the same and that is all the "joke" is based on.

I'm going to add my vote to those that liked Taken. Admittedly it wasn't "excellent" and I have no desire to rush out and see it again. However, I do enjoy stories that span several generations and Fanning Dakota's performance is wonderful.
