Odo is known to be very dedicated to his job. He even reads crime and passion novels, not for entertainment, but to understand how criminal minds work (at least, that's the excuse he gives in The Ascent) )

So is it inconceivable he would have read about police and investigators in different cultures, including 20th century Earth and have remembered that this would be a credible disguise?

I don't think there was a dog, although that might have made a better episode. Ostrich, Rumpelstiltskin, Buck Bokai, mindless bimbo Dax for Bashir, babes for Quark...

Interesting that Odo can't replicate a human face, which he sees every day, but can perfectly reproduce a German Shepherd, something he probably hadn't seen before. Unless someone on DS9 had one; we know pets are allowed there because of Chester the cat.

I've kind of assumed that over time Odo's paradigm shifted from being unable to replicate a human face to feeling no need to replicate a human face. He replicates the female Founder in S7.

Can he replicate a German Shepherd so that it looks perfect to a German Shepherd though? Perhaps to a dog, Odo looks as unfinished as his Bajoran face (NOT a human one!) looks to the Bajora (and to humans).

That's a good point. Would Odo smell like a normal dog, when encountering other dogs?

If he's bad at human faces, he could be bad at dog smells as well.
