Is the Enterprise the only ship to get letters after its registry?

To be honest, I think the new Enterprise in Star Trek IV should have had a different number on it.

I see no reason for adding an -A after the designation. I mean we've had two ships named Enterprise in real life...

The first is CV-6, which was an aircraft carrier that served with virtually unrivaled distinction in WW2, and was scrapped in 1958

The second is CVAN-65 (Redesignated CVN-65 in the 1970's) which was the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier which entered service in the early 1960's.

Totally different designations and yet the same name.

BTW: I think the Excelsior should have been re-designated Enterprise, while retaining the -2000 hull number...

We've had many ships named Enterprise in real life. As the point of a registry number is to have a unique identifier for the ships in service, though, why not have `fixed' numbers along with the rotating ones? If it makes it harder for people to penetrate the system, all the better: why make it easy for anyone not in the service to estimate fleet strength?

I don't think fans would have been too thrilled if the number for the Enterprise had been changed, to be honest about it.

I'd like to think that maybe the original twelve Constitution-class ships got letters at least once, maybe at least an "A" designation before the number was changed.

if you go by the books, no.

the new Defiant in DS9 is retconned as the NCC 74205-A in the latest novels, while the Ambassador-class Excalibur was blown up and replaced by a Galaxy-class Excalibur-A...

...as for the Enterprise class, one DS9 novel depicted an alternate future where the Ent-F was Enterprise class
If memory serves, there was a DS9 novel where Sisko met up with some of his old crewmates from the Saratoga and at the end of the book they saw a new Saratoga-A being commissioned.

How do you know there were originally 12 Constitution-class ships? Was Enterprise one of them? Are you sure you aren't thinking of BSG?

Well, Kirk did say there were only 12 ships like his in Tomorrow is Yesterday. Of course, more could have been built later (or he could have been lying, which is less likely).

I can't be thinking of BSG, I haven't watched it since the first season. :)

No, I remember Kirk telling Captain Christopher in "Tomorrow is Yesterday" when Christopher was impressed by the Enterprise that there were only twelve like it in the fleet.

oh, well in case you cared, during the First Cylon War, the Colonial Fleet consisted of 12 Battlestars, one for each of the 12 Colonies (planets) of Kobol.

Interesting reuse of the number 12
