Is the bridge at a funny angle?

From the Discoprise EM magazine

This shot was from “Dagger of the Mind” and I believe it was never used again. The reversed decals were used on the starboard side. The slide and scaling, as Maurice said, was done with an optical printer. I think he suggested that it was a straightforward dolly shot as originally filmed.

This is speculation, but I recall seeing a memo (in TMoST?), complaining about the awkwardness of the Delta Vega approach shot. The same planet model seems to be used here and in the completed version of WNMHGB, as well as the first season main title. My surmise is that the DotM approach was intended, but not used, for the second pilot.

That was my favorite "discovered" shot when I first saw the episode on WTNH Channel 8. WPIX 11, which was my market's station for Trek, sliced that out of their badly edited films. Honestly, if I were to do a re-edit of The Cage, I'd put this shot in as the approach to Talos IV. The TOS-R re-dos remove all of the one-time quirks of the series. Like the phaser shot from orbit in The Alternative Factor or that fact that all of the ship shots from Charlie X came from the pilots.

That's something we fans worked out ages ago. John Zizolfo built a model of the concept using the AMT bridge kit in a cutaway dome. I whipped up a diagram many years ago (and probably already posted in this thread) to illustrate in a discussion here:

Having a ring of them around the bridge makes for handy lifeboats to blow out the top. Good docking port above that tube too.

The solutions of these last couple posts are only solving the matter of the turbo lift being off-center, not the size concern of fitting the turbo lift car into the vaulted area within the dome but outside the room of the Bridge, correct?

Yeah, you do have to handwave the dome bigger to accomodate.

Or sink the Bridge down (even more) into the teardrop. This would also leave more space in the dome for sensor tech!
Yeah, I'm ok with the bridge being complete recessed into the teardrop and that top area being used for sensor equipment and not considered an actual deck (which I guess is how the Kelvinverse Enterprise works now that I think about it).

You could sink the bridge into the teardrop and then face the bridge any way you want. The standby cars make great sense.

But the odd thing about a bridge on what would have been Deck 2 is that it is an isolated room surrounded by other rooms and even windows. But the only access to the rest of the deck is the turbolift. Seems as odd as having a skewed bridge in the first place. Of course a second exit, a la TAS, would make complete sense.

Alas, in my head canon, TOS as we saw it must be accommodated. YMMV...

Although the moments showing the bridge set was cut into wedge-shaped sections does play into the theory that Starfleet bridge modules aren't just modular in overall unit structure but on the level of crew consoles and stations, with Spock's station being swappable for a new console when R&D decided to change things up during the next drydock or Starbase repair stop.

unfortunately in Spock’s Brain you clearly see it’s not there.
You mean because there's sometimes a console there? No problem if the console is retractable - fine if it is only an auxiliary station and rarely used.
That red handrail often changes too - either 2 sections or 3 sections, depending on the episode (and sometimes the scenes within an episode)

One of the unofficial tech manuals talked about how the TOS bridge stations could be dismantled and fit into the turbolift for removal and upgrades. Interesting idea before Starfleet moved to the entire bridge module swap we have come to know and love today

Unless you buy into the theory of the auxiliary entrance by Spock's console, of course ;)

Heh, I understood and didn't mind that they needed to remove that console to accommodate filming, but it always bugged me that Nimoy would wrap his fingers around an edge that wasn't supposed to be there..

That was hard to notice in 1966. The audience had nowhere near our familiarity with the bridge layout, they were caught up in the story, and to top it off, cathode ray tube TV sets of the period showed less of the frame due to built-in overscan. Often a lot less.

So the makers of Star Trek were pretty close to coloring inside the lines, and the footage was good for air.
