Is the animated toon canon?

Larry Niven with "Known Space" has snuck into an episode of TAS. And as far as I know, that is the only televised adaptation of Known Space.

One interesting case is Captain Robert April, who was first mentioned onscreen in TAS, but has been accepted as part of Trek lore for decades now, appearing in several novels and short stories.
Also Kirk's middle name. Prior to TAS we only had his middle initial.

It's supposed to be canon, but on Trek BBS apparently it is not, or it would have its own forum.
Since TAS was originally conceived as a continuation of TOS, does it need a separate forum?
Same characters, same writers, same five year mission!

Not enough traffic to justify its own forum.

I've considered it canon since the beginning and I watched it first run.

Don't care what anyone says. If it aired, it's canon. This means stinkers like Way to Eden, The Cloud Minders, and Spock's Brain are canon.

Also, let's not forget, it was Richard Arnold who claimed that GR decanonized TAS, I'm not sure that was ever actually corroborated.

Personally I don't count ENT in my own canon and state that it never happened! Some Henry Winkler lookalike Captain before Kirk? Nah, it didn't happen!

What is it about Axanar that CBS doesn't like?

I'd guess: Running a mini unlicensed Trek merchandise empire, Alec Peters paying himself $38,000 of fan-donated money last year, telling everyone that they're better than CBS/Paramount's new Trek movies, calling themselves an independant professional Star Trek movie (so basically not a fan film, but a real Trek movie making illegal use of the Trek trademarks), using money donated on the promise of an endlessly-delayed fan film to set up a studio and offices where they're running their own for-profit buisness (Propworx) and with future plans to make commercial non-Trek movies, and at least one instance where they've referred to themselves as being officially sanctioned when they very much are not.
This insanely long thread covers everything in detail.

Agree. TAS is canon and continued the five year mission began on TOS.

Having seen TOS and TAS on the UK BBC back in the 70's and eagerly devoured the original Spaceflight Chronology and every ST novel that I then could buy, I guess that I grew up on one "version" of Star Trek. This was later reinforced by the FASA ST RPG in the 80's (which used the SFC timeline) , and then by the collaboration (of sorts) between FASA and JM Ford to create both that superb ST Novel "The Final Reflection" and FASA's Klingon settings and rulesbooks.

Canon has since left many of these wonderful works behind, but I never can. For me they are ST, and long may they continue!!

And yet, many "canon-lawyers" would criticise many of these works as "not-canon", and so not seeming to be worthy of discussion. I personally find it ironic that earlier, established works are now shunted out of canon to enable newer ones to take over? And sad that we can't all just enjoy our own personal view of Trek without being considered to be committing the (apparently?) vile sin of "non-canonicity" (sorry invented word).

I almost think that ST needs several different canons to cover the variety of "truths" that we have been exposed to over the last 50 years. Probably something like this:-
1) TOS, TAS & original crew movies.
2) TNG, DS9, VOY & TNG crew movies.
3) ENT
4) Abrams NeuTrek

Then, maybe we will all be happy and drop these ridiculous canonical arguments once and for all?

Heh, I don't even consider the original crew movies 2-6 in the same continuity as TOS/TAS, and I think of TMP as being it's own continuity.

I'm OK with Ent and nuTrek being in the same continuity. My guess is the former will never be explored in the latter other than the occasional name drop (or desk model) so I doubt much of Ent would ever be contradicted.

What does it matter if it is canon or not, either you enjoy it or don't? Its official status shouldn't determine someone's enjoyment of something.

Whether it is canon really doesn't matter as some of it has made it into the live action series. Shi'Kahr is in Enterprise and TOS remastered. The taunting of Spock by bullies is in Star Trek (2009).

Fair enough. Lot of points I didn't know there!

When I was a kid, I was very excited about TAS. Then when it came on the air, it just didn't feel the same. I was very disappointed. Now that I am an adult, I seem to like it more. I don't really understand why.

Nostalgia possibly. Same with me. Anyway, there's nothing wrong with that.
