I personally prefer Lower Decks as well, but out of curiosity: Have you watched all of The Orville, because they definitely dial down the juvenile humor a lot and end up producing some surprisingly deep and thought-provoking sci-fi stories later on, mostly beginning with season two.

Yes, I've seen all of it, but it took me a while... after two or three episodes, I stopped and only got back to it later.

You're right, the elements I didn't like got better over time. In its best moments, the show was a decent hommage/parody to 90s Trek. Especially in the first half of season 2, iirc. But then, there were moments when I felt the show can't decide what it wants to be, parody or serious rip-off, which irritated me.

I'd say the show is not really bad, there are so many worse shows out there ... just not entirely my cup of earl grey.

In the end I think it's good that every Star Trek show is different.
So I wouldn't really say, any series is like another one should be.
Sure, some I like better than others but I also like the variety of Star Trek.
There are many endless series in TV and streaming services.
But thinking about it guess even my favorite Trek shows, TOS and DS9 could get boring if they lasted from their beginnings until today.
So I am gald that f.e. Lower Decks is very different to other Treks and I really enjoyed it.

I preferred LD to DIS, because it has heart, and it’s cleverly written.

But after PIC, seeing how S3 widely liked despite it being like S1 which was met with mixed reviews, it’s hard to say that DIS did anything wrong, when it seems like the big issue for a lot of its detractors is that it lacked legacy characters, and specifically the actors that played those legacy characters. Detractors will like the stories that were panned as the worst as long as its coated in legacy characters.

I would have preferred for Discovery to have taken its cues from John Byrnes “Crew” miniseries which focuses on Number One’s career with each issue being set on a different ship and she at a different rank until she ended up on the Enterprise.

It was a refreshing spin on the tired as shit “starship show” formula of televised Trek.

Discovery is exactly as it should have been. If it had been something else we wouldn't have got SNW or Lower Decks or Picard.

Hm? I was replying specifically to the "only ship in the quadrant" trope, which rarely made sense in any context in which it was presented. I'm not sure what that has to do with DISCO.

The problem there is it would have been similar to Fuller's original pitch of an anthology series, which Paramount rejected because they wanted the continuing adventures of a starship and its crew.

That is continually my question.

I can nitpick TOS and DS9 but it's still Trek, still considered a part of Star Trek.

Discovery nitpicks are meant to exclude it.

The problems occurred in past Trek though and were accepted. There were whole nitpicker guides and Trek inconsistencies and such.

No where was it made to be "not real Trek."

No, imho Lower Decks is the weakest (besides TAS) and most overrated Star Trek series. If other people like it, great, but one show like this is enough for me.

I could see that for the first and maybe second season, but by season 3 it seemed pretty clear that it wanted to be mostly serious with light moments.

Discovery season one's first half is what Discovery should have been.

I'm quoting this late, but I was watching some episodes of Discovery's early Season 1, and there was quite a bit of good stuff in there. I also remember the season 5 episode where Burnham meets her younger self and her younger self was not that angry in the early going. Yeah she was a prisoner and committed mutiny, but she seemed to get over it pretty quickly.
