Is star trek as we knew it in the 90's dead? lets ask the spirit guides.

There are some episodes that have objectively bad writing. Though I don't know if you could say that Star Trek as a franchise is overall good or bad. I think each iteration has to be examined on its own. "Star Trek as a whole is objectively bad, " is just to broad of a generalization.

We have objective criteria for what makes good stories and what makes bad stories. So applying those criteria to episodes, or serialized stories would let us know if they are good or bad.
Please cite your criteria.

Trek has always, and will always, evolve. Not every one will come with it when it does, and that's okay, because that's why we can always go back and enjoy the Trek we enjoy from the past. But modern Trek can not simply 'clone' the old. In order to be relevant, it must always adapt.

Opinions are facts, especially when discussing controversial topics such as politics.
No. 1,000,000 times no.

Two opinions that sharply contradict each other can't both be facts. A fact is something that's indisputable. 2 + 2 = 4 is indisputable. That's a fact. The nitty-gritty of how money in the economy should be spent isn't a fact. All it does is let us know where the priorities are of the people who decide these things.

Political opinion used to be that witches exist among us. That didn't make it a fact just because it was political.

I think they were being facetious.

Back to the OP Star Trek cannot remain static. The sit there and treat it like some immutable thing is to miss the whole point of themes like growth, discovery, and improvement.

Exactly...at the time, DS9 was the whipping post and poster child for "NAWT TEH REEL STAR TRAK!!" Ironic that now it is the show everyone points to as the shining example of what Star Trek should be. Again, it's just a factor of nostalgia and "frozen in time" expectations. The new shows have plenty of issues. No doubt....

'They didn't explore planets.' 'The characters were dark'. It wasn't as "popular"

They treated that show so poorly at times. I remember sometimes they would have promotional literature for Trek in general featuring 'all the shows'. They would have pictures of Kirk, then Picard and then Janeway.

Or when DS9 had its finale, no real press coverage. And then Voyager had its finale, the local news did a 15 minute special on it with interviews. Garrett Wang said he didn't like the finale on air lol.

Things were better in the past.

Thing will be better in the future. Its always right now that sucks.

I'd say we are in the middle of another sci fi / fantasy renaissance right now. Just like in the mid 90's. More sci fi shows than ever right now. And the complaining is massive and nasty.

It's no secret I like the Kurtzman Era better than the Berman Era.

There are certain things I don't like about this era. I do like the way it modernizes the characters or makes them re-latable. It brought up issues the other series pretended didn't exist or ignored (except DS9 and maybe Voyager).

But as far ship special effects and design, I don't think they're going to be selling a lot of models or toys. You can't see the ships, they're too vague and blurry. The 90's ships, at least you were able to get a good look at the ships and see all the curves, windows and parts.

Sadly, that is a dying demographic and I don't blame them for not worrying about it. I can do more with a 3d printer than most models now, so expecting CBS to license it all out for something that hardly pays off is a fool's errand.

They'll just sell the official downloadable 3D model, with all the detail one wants, to those individuals or service companies who have 3D printers. The mass market of toys wasn't always the best, especially if the toys weren't articulated very well or, worse, not built very well. Printed, painted, decaled, and shipped properly, one can get the best of all words via 3D printing and for not too much more money and would last decades or longer. Or just buy the video sets or posters. Someone somewhere could do a nice 36x24 of the 1701-D refit, certainly...

90's Trek is the best. I loved all the shows and all the characters. They really focused on character development and having an emotional attachment with the audience. You do not get that now.

That was almost all the time. The earliest promos for Enterprise billed it as "Before Kirk. Before Picard. Before Janeway." No mention of Sisko at all. There was also a special on Patrick Stewart that A&E aired in 2003 that ran a poll asking your favourite Star Trek captain that included Kirk, Picard, Janeway and Archer. But not Sisko.

I'd say Star Trek in general is about ~91% consistent within itself across the various cannon franchises.

Oh, I remember, they basically tried to airbrush DS9 out of Trek and that was even WHILE IT WAS AIRING. People often criticise Avery Brooks for not being more INTO Trek as the other actors mainly are, but from what I’ve heard he was treated very poorly, so I don’t entirely blame him for maintaining a bit of a distance. I was horrified reading Mark Altman’s “Fifty Year Mission” book, Rick Berman tears Brooks to shreds in a fairly personal and vindictive attack.

Exactly, one character. That doesn't even come close to making a show.
I would also argue Dahj and Soji, Data posthumously, and to a lesser extent: Seven, Rios, and Musiker.

But keep moving those goalposts.

EDIT: Anyway, GTD isn't the place for this. Not until six months after the last episode of the season aired. Which, by my calendar, looks like the end of September. I don't want us getting warned for breaking spoiler policy.
