Is "Star Trek" a goofy title?

Never thought it was goofy; it was simple but rather unique -- what's another popular title with "trek" in it? "Star Wars" might have been called "Big, Simplistic, Derivative Space Shoot "em Up" and been no more goofy.

I thought the Cochrane bit in FC would have been funnier if, after hearing about cybernetic monsters travelling back in time, he started riffing on TERMINATOR, asking Riker if 'he'd be back' and then laughing uproariously.

But that would probably make the FC future too obviously our future ... and that can't be, because if we have a nuclear war, there WILL Be a nuclear winter, and what they show in FC is so absolutely wrong as a postnuclear environment and cloudscape, it isn't even funny.

Was it named in the same tradition other sci-fi shows were named like Flash Gordon, Lost in Space etc, and if so if it were made today would it be titled any differently?

It perfectly describes it.

Wasn't always so, after it was canceled I remember someone saying what a "short Trek" it turned out to be but time has rectified that shortcoming.

Interestingly here in Germany I get the impression that only very few people know or think about what the title acrually means.
They hear "Star" and think about silly spaceships, they hear "Trek" they think ponity ears.
Until it`s revival in the nineties Star Trek and TNG were titled "Raumschiff Enterprise (Spaceship Enterprise) by the way, decades before a Star Trek show was originally called by that name. Since Deep Space Nine the original title got stuck with the viewers thank god.
Quite confusing for average German viewers!
