Is Star Fleet Battles officially dead?

While I personally prefer Squadron Strike to SFB, I'm glad to see that SFB still has some presence. So, not dead, but defintely dying out (in terms of playership). In the unlikely event I'm anywhere near a convention pick-up game, I'd happily join in, even if I'm not current on all the rules. Squadron Strike clearly takes some of its lineage from SFB, in its check boxes for damage, shields, etc., even if its damage allocation methods are decidedly different. Said boxes aren't arranged inside a top-down silhouette of the ship's hull (one of the things I liked about SFB), but the underlying concepts are there. I don't want to hijack this thread touting a competing product (any more than I already have) but if SFB ever does completely die out, its worth knowing there's a good landing place out there, should one care to try it.

I don't think you're hijacking the thread at all. I'm interested in hearing about other systems. It would take a lot to lure me away from SFB, though.

ADB just uploaded A Call To Arms: Star Fleet Book # 2 in PDF format to various sites.

Do note that this is an expansion to the game; you need Book # 1 to play (version 1.2 is current).

Jean said the plan, as with previous products, is after about 90 days of player review and comment, they will go to print for hard-copy sales. Anyone who buys the PDF version will receive a free copy of the updated / edited PDF version. (You still have to pay for the hard copy.) Usually, they just do one update to final, but if they do a couple - few updates, you should get each (PDF) version for free. At least, that's how it's worked in the past, and it wouldn't make sense otherwise.

Disclaimer: Again, I don't work for nor speak for ADB. I'm just a loyal customer. :)

As I understand it, I don't think of that as an expansion, but rather as a separate game. I have one of those Call to Arms books, and while it's clearly SFB-adjacent, it's also clearly another rules set entirely.

You are correct: it's not an expansion for SFB but rather to the "sister game" A Call To Arms: Star Fleet based on the Mongoose game-engine. ACTA:SF Book 1 (version 1.2) is the core rules, and Book 2 is more ships and scenarios. I haven't bought it yet, maybe later tonight.

The first release of ACTA was done by Mongoose by people who didn't understand SFB or FedCmd. It had significant problems. Drones were the ultimate weapon. It wasn't "bad", but it wasn't good.

ADB re-wrote it whole-cloth to keep the ACTA look-&-feel but also to keep the SFB game balance. I've never played it, but it looked like a reasonable compromise. It has an active fan-base.

Every time I hear Cole say that somebody else screwed something up and only he could fix it I'm reminded of the line in Fright Night: "Brewster, you're my hero."

Well, it was screwed up, and SVC didn't fix it himself but rather had the group in Tennessee do the re-write.

ADB has opened registration for the Sapphire Star 2 tournament.

Might not be the right place to post this, but I hear rumors you are looking for a SFB opponent. I’m in the Fairfax area, and have been playing on and off since 83, when I found a game better than Knight Hawks to play (low bar I know). Haven’t found one better since, for my tastes.

If I remember correctly, two new SFB products came out in 2021, one with new Tholian ships, the other with alternate history Romulan hulls.

So, the game is not yet deceased.
