Is someone trying to hack into my computer??

James Bond

So I just bought a new Laptop with integrated WiFi, and I've just set it up and it's good to go. Now all of a sudden, Zone Alarm on my Desktop is going nuts blocking connection attempts over Port 139, which I guess is the port used by Windows PCs for file sharing and whatnot. The Zone Alarm pop up also lists the connection on my ISP network's IP address.

So is this likely just because my Laptop is trying to connect to my Desktop, or is the timing just a coincidence, and I'm in fact under attack by some assclown sitting in his underwear in his mom's basement?

If it matters, my Laptop is WiFi, but my desktop is plugged in directly to my router via ethernet.

so, what makes you think that anybody out here can tell?

It could be a glitch. It could be a hack. How would we know?

would you like me to give my magic 8 ball a good shake and get back to you?

The real shame here is that if I was to utterly violate this guy here, I would get a warning. How fucked up is that.

Anyway, does anyone have any actual, non trolling responses? I'm just looking for some info and perhaps some advice here in the Science and Technology forum.

i truly apologize, i don't mean to have you feel that I am trolling you.

I think that you are asking the impossible. Nobody can know whether or not you are being hacked without access to your computer.

The best guess says its possibly true maybe.

I'm sorry if this seems flip, or uncompassionate, i suggest that the crickets aside from my response actually confirm
my point. Nobody knows. I'm sorry you are having trouble with your computer. You may wish to contact remote assistance or your local service providers, perhaps they can determine if somebody is trying to hack you.

You'd be surprised just how well educated people in the Trek Tech forum are and just how much experience they have in all areas. There's always a chance someone will know what he's talking about (maybe they've experienced it themselves) and will have a good answer that can help or could ask him further questions to help them build a better picture of what's happening.
So it's not helpful to troll someone for asking such a question as this one.

He only posted his post 3 and a half hours ago, most people are either still in bed or are at work depending on their timezone, it may take an entire day before someone posts a response so don't jump to conclusions that nobody has a clue, we don't all float around the TrekBBS 24/7

Agreed on both points, Fire. The not to be American-centric but the United States is just waking up now, prometheuspan.

James Bond, I have no technical idea as to whether somebody is trying to invade your computer. Do you have anything worth stealing on it? That's one question I'd ask.

I'd also download Windows Process Explorer. It's a free utility that will tell you what your computer is doing. Your problem could be as simple as you downloaded Adobe Reader so you can open .pdf files and Adobe is looking for an update.

Here is a place to download Process Explorer.

while i admit that it may not have been the most helpful post, Its simply not true that I was trolling.

I stated what I thought to be the most relevant truths.
I asked what i felt to be very serious and relevant questions.

Again, I apologize for any stress that this may have caused anyone.

A thought btw that comes to mind is;

Does he have spybot?
Its free...

speak for yourself Tachyon Shield yes we study and analyze all the post at all hours and never sleep...*gets another cup of coffee*

and yes we have hack every computer that is out there everywhere.

right now, we are working on hacking the source of reality and that includes every computer and every "mind" in existence yes that is the three existences past, present, and future.

We know you are one sick puppy and need a spanking like you usually get in all those videos you make.

btw this is not directed exactly at Bond, James Bond but at the population of puppies that do "porn" all the time. Question is, why do we do that?

According to the time stamp from the board, you just posted from 45 minutes in the future. How did you do that, think?

Actually, it would explain a lot. :p

And James Bond, I agree, you need a good spanking! ;) :rommie:

EDIT: See my problem, think? I just quoted a post you haven't made yet. Fascinating. :vulcan:

Its sex with a hot woman, the money is decent and some of us are turned on by being watched, OK?

From my understanding of ZoneAlarm, it could be either, but I admit my understanding is a bit out of date since I moved to Mac-based.

Could someone more well-versed in the subject please attempt to give James Bond an answer here? :vulcan:

Thank you. :techman:

I would bet seriously that it is your laptop trying to chat to your desktop - especially if you have configured a workgroup using the home networking wizard. Assuming you chose a name for it or left the default ("MSHOME" on XP I think) then it might genuinely be a case of your laptop trying to chat to your desktop.

Very few people actually get "hacked" - certainly not as many as who think they do.

I think you are fine - just keep using a firewall, run regular anti-virus and anti-spyware checks, and if you really are bricking it, restart your router and get a new IP.

Thanks for your response. While not the most advanced user, I'm still a very experienced user; and based on what I can tell, I think you're right. I have encryption on my router, and my firewall has blocked all the incoming connections, so I haven't been compromised or anything anyway. And Outpost4, I don't have anything worth stealing on my computer, at least no more so than anyone else.

For one the timing of all this is very suspect (that this would start literally right after I set up the Laptop), and the more I research the technical aspect of everything (such as the incoming IP address being in the same range as the IPs used by Dlink routers), the more confident I am that it's in fact the laptop on my network.
