Do you consider Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer to be an official part of the Santa Claus legend?

Yes I do, infact I think he's pretty well accepted as SC "canon" -the only addition to the SC legend in the 20th century.

I dispute that Rudolph was the only addition to the Santa Claus legend in the 20th century as the Six White Boomers were also added in the 20th century. It is true that the Boomers only pull Santa's sleigh while he is delivery to Australian children but that is about 3 hours of Santa's entire flight.

Oh, God, we're debating the canonicity of reindeer now? Help!

I hear next year they're retconning Santa as driving a convertable instead of a sleigh, and he gets stopped by a robot traffic cop

Oh, your backwards Australian ways don't count. ;)

In a few thousand years, do you think archeologists will find images of Santa Claus and think we viewed him as a God?

I voted "yes." While it's really impossible to determine true canon for the Santaverse, since he's derived from the ancient folklore of several cultures, the modern version of Santa is mostly based upon the poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas" ("'twas the night before Christmas....") and the Coca Cola advertising campaign mentioned above. Various pop culture sources from the 20th Century have fed into it, creating a consistent core set of elements (e.g. elves, the North Pole workshop, Mrs Claus) and Rudolph is definitely one of the best known of these. He is quite consistent with the overall mythology and contradicts nothing vital.

Don't forget the now standard red and white suit, it's strictly 20th century. Thanks Coca Cola!

Nope. Coke had little, if anything, to do with the current image of Santa.

Bunch o' retconned BS -- it's as bad as Marvel comics, Xmas is!

On top of that you have the cheery message of how the new guy will always get crapped on until he saves everyone's ass -- yeah, great moral there folks; good lesson for the kiddies.

Sorry, but from what I've read, Coke DID have a lot to do w/ the current image. In illustrations from before their ads, Santa was neither was fat nor wore a red suit. And St. Nicholas, the real-life person on whom he is primarily based, is not depicted as fat or wearing red.

There are 10 Reindeer
