Is Primeval worth checking out?

I've never been interested in Primeval because I got the general impression that it was rather "meh," but I just found out that Alexander Siddig has joined the cast in series 4. What kind of show is it, i.e. is mostly drama with some comedy or lighter fare like Eureka? And how problematic would it be to suddenly jump into series 4 just for Siddig?

You can jump to S4-but you'll miss things. The show is fun. Go see it from the beginning. It's mostly drama, w/ a pinch of humor. Good humor, mostly.

The first two seasons were pretty good. I liked the Cutter character. The third season had a good arc to it, but it wasn't as good as the first two. This fourth season is off to a good start with some interesting mysteries.

I think it's a fun show. It's not deep or anything, it's just damn cool to see CGI dinosaurs running amok in modern day Britain. The show has a great budget with gorgeous location filming in huge settings (zoos, malls, stadiums, etc). The characters are cutesy and entertaining.

I think season 4 is the perfect place to jump on. The main storyline of the series was concluded at the end of season 3, and they are starting fresh.

Go see the webisodes that are online, and then start with the first episode of season 4. If you feel like something is missing, then you should check out the earlier seasons.

You'll miss out on stuff if you don't watch the earlier series.

It's mostly fun in a Eureka kinda way if Eureka was done by Brits. Bit more serious. ONce character starts off as comic relief and they drop some of that because it would have got irritating to maintain. The Cutter character is intersting and intense, which gives the show a bit more weight.

I just rewatched them all prior to S4 and I'm glad I did.

It feels that way to me a bit, like it's fun, but it never takes it to another level so it never fully engages me. I've tried three or so times to watch but it just doesn't grab me even though I've really wanted to like it.

I've only seen the first two seasons, but they're a lot of fun. Each week is a breezy, fast-paced, mini-monster movie with appealing characters.

The character of Connor is one of 'us.'

and Conner gets the hot girl in the end.

I forgot to mention, and surprised no one else has, Ben Miller as James Lester, the Government flack/troubleshooter in charge of the place. His dry sarcasm is always a highlight when he's on screen.

He's hilarious. Dead-on delivery.

Lester: "Are they all right?"

"They've stolen a car."

Lester: "So they're fine, then."

All right, you guys have convinced me to give the show a spin from the beginning.

Of course, the question is when I find the time to watch it. I already have The Twilight Zone (just got the complete series set) and Farscape (ditto, although I've seen it many times over) on my plate, as well thinking about finally watching Mad Men...

I'd say it's Stargate style fluff. Entertaining, not especially serious. It has story arcs but not the you must watch every second kind and is mostly reliable fun.
There's only 23 episodes in the first 3 series so it's only like 1 US season to watch to catch up.

I dvr it, put it on when I've got internet stuff to catch up on, and look up when I hear Alexander Siddig (he's the only reason I'm watching). It has moments of charm.
