Is Okona a really terrible character?

^SERVICE UNAVAILABLE

He was a terrible character, but then there are much worse. I know it's all subjective but Harcourt Mudd and Neelix are just two that immediately pop into my mind.

Nope, not even close..the episode isn't particulalry good, but basically it fits well with ST's view of acceptance...don't judge a book by his cover.

not a terrible character, but a pretty lousy episode. It's meditations on "humor" are just awful.

I found the character to be pretty annoying. He's basically a ren-faire pirate.

I don't know if I'd say worst ever though.

I liked Harcourt Mudd. Especially the little trade between Mudd and Kirk during the episode, "I Mudd."

Mudd: Well of course, I left.

Kirk: He broke jail.

Mudd: ...I borrowed transportation.

Kirk: He stole a spaceship.

Mudd: ...They gave me pursuit.

Kirk: THEY FIRED AT HIM!

:techman:

Mudd, all in all, was pretty amusing. I don't think he was a terrible character.

Not the worst, but he's quite well up there. It would've been interesting, had be become an occasional recurring character, whether they could've improved him and the general feeling about him may be different...

Terrible character? No. The writing for him isn't exactly rapier-sharp in its wit but it's not bottom of the barrel dreadful either. The actor isn't brilliant, which compounds the mediocre writing though.

Really, the biggest problem is they've tried to create an opera buffa type of character, and the episode has him coming off as a second-rate Han Solo, which is not what he's really designed to be in terms of his story function. That drags down the entire episode.

I liked the idea of the character - just not the portrayal. The whole episode seemed watered down - the story line, the writing of the characters, and the acting of the guests. It wasn't the worst episode or character but they certainly needed to be kicked up a few notches.

^No-Script? I allowed the site & it worked OK.

Okona could have been an interesting recurring character.
They might have written him better with more practice.

I think the main characters certainly got better fleshed out as time went by.

Giving Okona such period-specific hairdo and stubble was something of a mistake IMHO. Harry Mudd milked on the timeless gypsy look rather than its specific 1960s variants, giving us something that's not immediately identifiable as a 1960s pimp, or at least not solely so; Han Solo tried to catch the 1930s adventure movie feel despite bowing to some 1970ism; even the Viper pilots of classic BSG at least made an effort at "being out of time". Okona might have been far more memorable in a silent movie moustache...
