Is Neelix the Jar Jar Binks of Star Trek?

While Jar-Jar was supposed only to be comical but ended up silly

Well, not entirely. He's been shown, during the Clone Wars series, that's despite acting silly at times, he's perhaps smarter than people give him credit for.

No, Wesley Crusher is the Jar-Jar Binks of Star Trek - no, actually, Jar Jar is the Wesley of Star Wars.

Neelix...well, he has his moments. He's one of the few people that could make a Vulcan want to kill him just by being himself. Still, he's one of the good guys and has his awesome moments. Annoying, yes. Jar-Jar, no.

And for crying out FRELLING loud, he was NOT a pedophile. Jokes about pedophiles are not funny. Ever.

I'd think the cheese thing was more a massive design flaw in Voyager's computer network than anything Neelix was to blame for.

When did he get someone killed?

In "Basics Part 2" where he had Ensign Hogan collect bones outside of a cave and a land eel came out and ate him. That;s really stupid on Neelix's part.

Not for me personally. Personally I always thought of Wesley as the Jar-Jar Binks character because I thought Will Wheaton's acting was so bad at the time IMO

Not at all... though I think his character was wasted in the mess hall.

He had the potential to be a wheeler and dealer trader helping Voyager bargain their way through the Delta Quadrent, but making him serve soup instead really put the character in the background of the series.

Yes, I can see how "Stay here, by your self, and pick up this suspicious pile of bones right next to this sinister and dark cave" might be considered poor judgement:lol:.

Definitely not!

While Jar-Jar was supposed only to be comical but ended up silly, Neelix had a well-constructed background story which explained his way of trying to be cheerful and helpful, even if he over-did it many times.

My theory is that Neelix actually was a very tragic character, struck by the terrible loss of his family in the war. But instead of grieving and being depressed, he tried to keep his spirit up by being cheerful and helpful. Those who dismiss Neelix as a silly clown character should watch or re-watch "Jetrel" where Neelix's background story is revealed. That might lead to a reevaluation of the character.
Neelix is also a homeless war orphan. So to spite his inner turmoil, Neelix is also someone that lacks proper social skills due to the conditions he was raised in. Being that he has no family, he had nobody to teach him properly. That was evident upon first meeting him, he was dirty, slovenly & suffering from malnutrition. He had to learn proper social interaction from Janeway, Tuvok & Kes.

Jar-Jar was a silly character that we the audience weren't meant to take seriously. Neelix was a silly character that we were meant to take seriously. I'd rather have the Gungan, thank you very much.

I think the comparison is more with Quark, as the "outsider comedy relief" for the show, but whereas Quark worked well for the role, Neelix came off as incompetent and clownish.

And like he was secretly stealing the underwear of female crew-members.

I never liked Neelix, but I never really hated him, either. I think the comparision to Jar-Jar is unfair, since Neelix had a pretty well developed background--whereas Jar-Jar was just an annoying, one-note character whose overwhelming stupidity was later taken advantage of by the bad guys in the senate.

I think they are are both accountable as characters who aren't needed or required. Jar Jar didn't say anything that wasn't characteristic and down to earth or earthy and neither did Neelix.
They are added to give color and depth to what might be a dragging script for some people and it makes the invention work.
It's also the only reason they aren't killed off until the very end.

But neither character was killed off.

From "Menace" thru till "Sith", Nute Gunray under the orders of Darth Sidious/Chancellor Palpatine have been trying to murder Senator Amedala because she had one of most respected opposing political veiwpoints that threatened his plans to form the galactic Empire. Jar Jar was Amedala's back-up representive in the Senate. You don't think after she was dead, that he didn't order his assassination too?:vulcan:

um, no he didn't. Binks is still alive into the post-PT era.
