Is Khan really Kirk's greatest adversary?

Yeah, that would have been...unfortunate. TWOK and TSFS really needed musical continuity probably more than any other installments in the franchise.

I know a lot of folks say Star Wars owes a lot to Kurosawa, but having watched the films in question, I really don't see the resemblance.

Battle Beyond the Stars is the Magnificent Seven knockoff. And Robert Vaughn's Battle character, burned-out mercenary Gelt, is just an sf version of his Mag7 character, Lee.

Less variety is an accurate analysis of his work, but its sort of ironic you mention the 1979 Dracula score, the complete version is one of his more original compositions (of that or any era of his career) and a personal favorite.

Between Goldsmith and Williams, I definitely choose Bernstein!

Elmer Bernstein was a marvelous composer, but Goldsmith often took the art of film scoring to new levels unlike most, time and time again.

The general outline of the plot (princess seeks aged warrior to smuggle something away from enemies) is like The Hidden Fortress, and the bickering droids are clearly inspired by the bickering peasants in that film. But it's more an influence than a copy, as opposed to "Balance of Terror" being The Enemy Below in spaceship drag.

Williams did have some variety. In the last three or four decades just about all of his Spielberg/Lucas jobs had tremendous power, however, and usually his non-escapist films tended to go to the highest-profile directors who could afford him, i.e. Oliver Stone. I still feel the UNDER SIEGE composer could and should be sued by John Williams for stealing his JFK music so blatantly. Perhaps it was temped, then kept. I can't say.

That being said, the prequels for STAR WARS have arguably two to one memorable themes per film at best, with his best being REVENGE OF THE SITH. There's a lot of comparative musical filler present, some of which includes leftovers from the first JURASSIC PARK. Given his longevity and present age, I'd still say he's delivered the power as best as anybody could. I just didn't detect much of it in CRYSTAL SKULL.

The first STAR WARS has been compared at times to THE SERCHERS as well....as has TAXI DRIVER. Lookin' for women....

I would recommend the Criterion release of Kurosawa's "The Hidden Fortress." It includes an interview with George Lucas himself wherein he talks about Kurosawa's influence on his work, including Star Wars.

I could write that Khan is Kirk's "hatest" adversary

Kirk should have been dragged back to Quisnos to stand trial for what happened on that Klingon ship (even though it was Scotty's doing).

Then we could have had an episode entitled, "Trials & Tribble-ations". :p

Yes, I misspelled that on-purpose because thats how I read it every time I come across it. LOL

How fast food (and other industries) haven't figured-out they could get amazing product-placement in space. Imagine if DS9 had a McDonalds?

That's a cool idea. DS9 should absolutely have made a deal to put a McDonalds, or a Burger King or KFC, visible in the background of the Promenade, near Quark's. It would not only have increased the realism of the mall, it would have increased the budget of the show. Win-win.

Ugh, I'm glad they didn't do that. It's about one step away from the ENT concept of having boy bands perform in the mess hall.

I don't want that particular kind of contemporaneous reminder in my Trek.

KFC: still in business (whatever that term means in a world with no money) because they refuse to release their list of herbs and spices to public replicators...
