is Jadzia Bi-sexual?

I think it is propably necessary for a Trill to be bi-sexual. After all, the symbionts get implanted in the next available host, no matter who, so the symbionts have no choice of gender. That means that during their lifetime they get both male and female partners.

As the host automatically gets all his symbiont's memories - and with them the previous hosts' memories as well - they would most likely freak out from embarrassement if they were 100% straight.

Hence I think we may assume that the Trill host training also includes being very open minded in sexual matters.

I think pre-implantation counseling would be helpful and probably required for dealing with past life memories. And I originally thought they would probably be bisexual. Until Hermoid's post brought up a valid theory... once joined, they are a new person. Past life memories may not count at all in the area of sexual preference once they become a completely different person. Or those memories could be sublimated to a corner of the mind like, say, a murderer's memories. Yes, they will have past life memories of being with other sexes. But those memories could just as easily have all been heterosexual, which could come through as an overwhelming emphasis on the memories being heterosexual versus which of the sexes were involved. Or not.

There is not enough evidence on screen to make any valid assumptions, or to prove any theories. So, like much, if not all of Trek... they are what you perceive/ignore/believe/imagine them to be.

Imagine this -- a version of yourself in the past was madly in love with this woman. Madly. Then you meet up with the same Symbiont with a new host. All of their memories stay with the Symbiont so they both remember all of the great times they had together and all of the hardships they managed to beat. But, oh, shoot. Society says you shouldn't date people from your 'past lives.'

I think, though, that it went like this: We as humans don't really care one way or another if two people who were in love in past lives get back together. Because, you know, that would be nice in a way. But Trill society has put an impression onto their people that doing this is a enormous taboo. But by making both of the trill's female, we can understand that what they're doing is taboo because our society has been telling us that two women shouldn't be together in a romantic relationship.

It's true it was also a ratings stunt. And I do think they could have thrown in at least one alternate sexuality character into a cast, though. Like maybe instead of Mayweather being the guy that never does anything he could have been a married man on the boarders of space sending communications back to his husband. He could still look at the console dramatically, if need be. :p

If DS9 was directed by pussies, than what do you say about TNG? They had a perfect opportunity to show a lesbian kiss (or more), but they turned it down. (TNG: The Host)

I wonder when a Trill joins the program to host a worm if they have to agree to be Bi-sexual? Not because they might meet pass loves, but so that they might be more acceptable to the memories that they will no doubt share with the worm

One of the points made in the episode is that Trills are not supposed to "rejoin" relationships with each other after the symbionts pass to new hosts. Jadzia broke a major taboo here, whether her partner was male or female.

As Newspaper Taxi put it, the Trill taboo was an allegory on our homosexuality taboo and vice versa - and both sides of the equation served the practical purpose of seeing two women kiss on screen.

But how does the Trill taboo look if viewed out of the Paramount context and in the in-universe context instead? Why would the Trill society do that? Any real commonalities with our taboos?

Is it a ban on something that doesn't actually do any harm but looks strange and threatening? Unlikely - it's hard to imagine why contact with past acquaintances would look strange and threatening either to the host or the Trill.

Is it a ban on something that is unproductive or counterproductive for the society, at least by some archaic standard? Perhaps. If the Trills don't move forward with their lives, they are wasting their potential as information and experience sponges. This would be waste from the viewpoint of the hosts, who would prefer to get more experienced and more adventurous slugs - but it doesn't seem as if the hosts are in any position to dictate rules, when the slugs control the supply and when the demand is never a dominant market force. But it could be a waste from the slug viewpoint, too: if the host is allowed to linger with his or her past life, the slug doesn't get to have fun.

But the taboo is a bit too specific for any of that. The Dax slug can hang around with Ben Sisko all it wants - it's only relationships with fellow Trills that it must avoid. This makes little sense from the "getting stuck with the past" viewpoint, as Dax is definitely stuck with its Curzon past as long as it remains associated with Ben Sisko.

Can anybody come up with an angle where the taboo makes an ounce of sense? Not necessarily rational sense - it would suffice for it to be an understandable taboo, the way our taboos on homosexuality or nudity may be understandable.

Sisko is not immortal, though, so the Dax symbiont would eventually have to move beyond that friendship. But two joined Trill lovers could conceivably stay together forever - an immortal union that could ignore all external stimuli. Hence "rejoining" is forbidden.

Ahh. An interesting take - but do the Trills really see themselves as immortal, or so significantly longer-lived than the average humanoid that the distinction would matter?

(What is the life expectancy of a Trill anyway?)

"Bisexuality was little more than a fad that did not last beyond the mid 21st century." - Data in "The Neutered Zone"

Okay...I made that up.

I often ponder about Trills and sexuality. Is Jadzia bi, maybe but i dont think so. Dax being a symbiont creatue which as far as i know has no specific gender thus it may have attractions to either gender. Jadzia and dax are two seperate beings in one body when joined, with shared feelings and emotions so is jadzia bi sexual or is the symbiont? can Dax be gay/bi or is that just how the creature is?

No. That was the point of the plot. Jadzia being placed in a position where others were uncertain and they were trying to influence or force her. In the end, she proved she was who she knew herself to be.

Well, Therin's reason is pretty much the one given in the Companion:

DS9 Companion said:
The Trill taboo against "reassociation" was something cocreator Michael Piller had suggested early on in the series. "He felt they'd have to have a very strict taboo in order to avoid an aristocracy of the joined," says [René] Echevarria [co-writer of "Rejoined"]. "Otherwise, they'd all only want to hang out with each other, their dear old friends from five hundred years ago, and it would become a really screwed-up society."

Plus, there's the fact that Sisko was just one guy - and, unlike Curzon, Jadzia was a Starfleet officer who got posted to DS9, rather than requesting it (even if, in the days before Trills went interstellar, they made sure the symbionts went to people who lived on different continents, they could never have legislated against two people running into each other in the course of their lives). I have more trouble with Ezri getting to stick around on DS9 without so much as a cross word from the Trills - effectively picking up as best she could where Jadzia left off - especially since she did want to do it, and could easily have gone through with returning to the USS Destiny, at the very least. ("Do you WANT to stay?" "(pause) Very much.")

I remember "The Assignment," and, additionally, "The Reckoning," in which chroniton particles flood the station and interrupt a Prophet's battle with Kosst Amojin.

I was merely referring to Sisko's demigod status rather flippantly, not making a serious theological pronouncement—though one could reasonably argue that the Prophets were never in any danger simply because they knew, through their prescience, that Kooky Killer Keiko's plan would never come to fruition.

It was meant as a joke, and I should have used a smiley. My apologies for the confusion. :)
