Is it true in the Expanded Universe Darth Vader did a pod race?

I just read this wiki on this. I thought they were joking but in the EU did Darth Vader do a pod race to save people he remembered from his past on Tatooine?

I am just trying to figure out how that would have worked out? Surely the Empire would need him all the time so how could he sneak off to do this race?

The only person in the Galactic Empire that can make Vader heel by that point is the Emperor. And Vader is mad at the Emperor for lying to him about what happened to Padme.

What would have happened to the Empire had Vader killed the Emperor?

Well of course it was Disney that explains it
Disney doesn't micromanage the stories, they didn't tell someone to write that.
So no, it being Disney doesn't 'explain it'. The EU had a ton of silly stuff as well.

And he didn't do it to save them out of the goodness of his heart, it was a means to and end, he was using them.

Context is important.

IIRC at the time he was being tested by the Emperor.

If Palpatine's dark padiwan strikes the Emperor with a heart full hate, the old prune-face's soul jumps out of his body and freejacks the younger stronger sexier attacking apprentice, which is exactly what happened in Return of the Jedi.

"Rise of Skywalker" rules.

Oh.

Exactly why Padme didn't want to be a padiwan.

"Padiwan Padme paddleboards like a paddlefish".

How he spends his vacation time is his own business. The Empire runs on the use it or loose it system for benefits.

This will be how they get Tom Cruise and Patrick Dempsey into the Star Wars universe, with a pod racing movie.

Tatooine Nights: The Legend of Darth Vader

Vader probably had a lot of leeway in where he could go and what he could do, as long as his assignments were completed. This takes place some time between ESB and ROTJ as I recall, and Vader didn't need Imperial governors/moffs "holding his leash" like in ANH.
