is it too techno-babbly?

As said before in this thread, I don't think Star Trek (1966) established itself as a series heavy on technobabble. That was more or less introduced in TNG. And I don't think the audience would expect that from a Trek series. Look at all the complaints about it. Do you really think that's what people expected then? The producers realized this and reduced the technobabble with Enterprise.

Enterprise is different, it was made to appeal to a "new audience" and tried to make itself different. Which is why it didn't even have the words "Star Trek" in the title until the ratings went in the toilet
Fair enough. But I think you're wrong about TOS and DS9. They didn't even include HALF as much technobabble as VOY. Well, don't get me wrong. That doesn't mean that I can't enjoy VOY! In fact I enjoy much of it. Also, I don't want to fight with you.

I'm just saying...I've seen all the shows quite recently in fact and they all have techno babble in them.

and we're not fighting, we're having a discussion

^ Okay, I kind of can see the technobabble in DS9 (especially in its earlier seasons), but I'd be VERY surprised to find technobabble in a TOS episode. Care to point me at one? :p

What I found most distracting was when the VOY writers used technobabble as a plot device (elaborated earlier in this thread, too). TOS never used it this way.

Well, then it's official: Your mind is even dirtier than mine. :p

was there ever a question about that?

Well, somewhere before the thread wandered into :wtf: territory, NCC-1701 asked Mrs Paris for any examples of technobabble in TOS. I'd be welcome to hearing them as well, with the noted caveat that I, too, enjoyed VOY despite its faults. :)

^ Well, Kegek, you certainly know how to destroy a good flirt. You're not my friend anymore. :(

Can't you proceed down that road and answer my question simultaneously? It's the secret to my numerous posts while still somehow existing in the real world: Multitasking!

You know damn well that you destroyed any momentum this conversation had.

 So you really are a woman!?!

BTW: *waits for TOS examples from Mrs. NCC ... eh Paris*

I am actualy in the process of answering your question right now. All my posts are made from work so in between I have to do some actual work

but I will start looking through transcripts in a little while for you.

BTW: Sorry mods, that this has become a chatroom.

Yes. I have noticed that this forum has become a little chatty lately. That's not a good thing, as it can scare off other posters. Wading through a bunch of 3 word posts can be a little intimidating and annoying. I'm not picking on only you NCC-1701, don't take it that way, but I saw this as an opportunity to address the issue.

A little off topic banter in threads is to be expected and is not a big deal. But I've seen it over and over again in a lot of threads as of late. It needs to be dialed back a bit. Chit chat should be done via PM, or exchange MSN handles. I one time started a lounge thread in this forum for idle chatting and off topic stuff. I'm not against doing that again if there is a demand for it. We're all here to have fun and talk about Voyager, right? The last time I tried a lounge thread it died fairly quickly however.

So, in conclusion, let's try to keep the threads in here on topic. Thank you.
Any comments or concerns should be addressed to me or kimc via PM.

^ I second all that of course and I'd also like to point out that if you're in a chatty mood we do have the lounges. They're a great way to meet other posters who may or may not post in the same forums you do.

So...no dirty talk? :D

VOY did rely on too much technobabble, and when they hit upon a solution like "rotating the shield frequencies" they just plugged it in and that was that. I think it was a bit lazy, the overreliance on babble, a way to sound intelligent without too much production/writer makework.

Just like characters pushing buttons. Beep boop beep. I'm a very busy crewman, I can crack wise and push these little buttons all the livelong day!

The techno babble content was just right for me, it made the show seem more realistic and gave it detail. I mean, they're flying through space in a massive piece of complex technology that they rely upon for their survival. They're scientists and explorers who study the galaxy with their technology. Of course they're going to talk about it. About lines like "Bypass the main plasma conduit!", I don't know what would have worked better. For my tastes, anything else would have seemed too simplistic. Without the techno babble, we'd be complaining about how Janeway always gave orders like "Fix that engine!" or "Make the weapons work better!" and it would seem like technology could be enhanced by the magic of Janeway's voice.

I actually wish the other series had more techno babble. TOS kind of stands alone, though. It was high camp and it doesn't really matter that the technology was a completely mystery.
